In a given case, it is found that, an individual had returned back to the town. On inquiring, it is found that, he was not employed for the last seven years. He mentioned that, all the jobs just did not pay for him to go to work, as the employers were taking much of the amounts for the child support for a child, which he had in the previous relationship.
Currently, he is having four children along with his wife. The wife response that, they did not take the support of daycare, as it was too expensive. However, their day-to-day expenses were managed through food stamps worth $900 per month. In addition, they were receiving benefits from the state welfare activities, which also included the rental expense. They had the habit of smoking, and the wife was consuming marijuana, due to migraine headaches. They are used to spend their food stamps for .50 on the dollar for extra spending cash.
It seems that, this case needs to be addressed from two perspectives. First of all, it is important for the government and other organizations to frame laws on child support, so that not much extra amount goes for it. Secondly, they need to frame policies, which will provide employment opportunism for such people. Thirdly, it is important to make the wife aware about the usage of marijuana. It can harm the health from several perspectives. And, finally, they should be prevented from selling off the food stamps. Instead, they need to look out for the employment opportunities, which will earn them a living. It seems that, due to lack of either proper education or due to lack of opportunities or due to lack of awareness, all the issues have come into a given scenario.
If this is the case for a town of 896 people, and even more, it is high time for the government to get alerted and take desperate steps in this direction. They need to frame strategies for employment, healthcare, and protection of these people. It will improve them from the educational and healthcare perspective, which in turn, shall shape their better future.
