Work at home is an excellent way to make a living without leaving the house. Such type of employment is called freelance when the expert performs work far from the actual office where other employees work. Most often such work is chosen by people interested to depend on an intolerable early operating schedule, mothers who just had babies and decided not to come back from a maternity leave. Also, this refers to those individuals who look for an additional source of earnings. Most often work at home has a price-work payment of work as on a straight line it is connected with how much an individual manages to execute. For many people work at home is a lifesaver when stationary work cannot be found. In spite of the fact that every year more and more people choose freelance over the traditional kind of work, however, such type of work has the shortcomings and advantages. Even though lots of people argue that working from home can be a huge disadvantage, many would insist that freelance type of work is the best kind which is going to become even more common within the next decades. For many women raising small children, work around the house is the only way to fill up the family budget, Ana da Silva, the author of the article on benefits of working at home states, “In my own experience, I feel very lucky I had my dad around when I was a child. Due to his working schedule, Dad spent half days at home and it was just awesome to see him around! He could just be taking care of our dog or taking a nap before his next shift but there was a very warm feeling in knowing that Dad was around to take care of me if I needed him” (Ana Silva). Computers and the Internet allow to earn in the most different ways – from programming and writing the descriptions of goods to the checking of the grammatical mistakes in school papers. Work without leaving the house can be a perfect job for both - men and women.
Men, usually experts in the field of information technologies, can choose to work at office or at home. Very often, they combine these two types of work: several hours a day spent at the office, the rest of the time is dedicated to the houses work. Women, most often, in the period of the maternity leave find ways to fill up the family budget by working at home. Sometimes it is not the need for money that forces them to sit at the computer. Many women just feel an urge need to get to the professional level or simply desire to acquire new profession. It is very common to hear: "I bet it is extremely nice, you work at home, you sleep for however many hours you want, you take care of the children, lunch is always a hand reach away, etc.” Firstly, there is no need to get up early to manage to get ready and get to work. This leads to saving lots of time and quite a bit of money for transportation costs, especially in big cities.
Secondly, working from home is an opportunity to plan the working day, it is possible to begin to work early in the morning or if you are a night owl, you can work for as long as you need or want. It is possible to work all week without any days off, and next week to go on vacation for a couple of days, children are always under supervision. If they go to a playground or school, then it is convenient to make the kids go home and feed them hot lunch without worrying whether the babysitter will do that or not. There is no house chatter of colleagues, public or obligatory actions, and there are no people whose company is unpleasant to you (Chin 1339-1340). Sometimes, the stress of the environment puts so much pressure on us both as individuals and workers. When a person is isolated working at home, this creates a safe environment in which nobody pushes him to be better or worse. There is no gossip or problems to worry about. Next advantage is that the boss doesn't demand anything, except the work performed in time: neither to stay at the office for the unknown amount of hours, nor go to help the confused colleagues. According to Sarah White, the author of the article on working from home, employers can also greatly benefit from a freelance worker: “It’s a common answer when you ask people why they like to work from home. Most will respond that their flexible work environment relieves the amount of stress in their lives and gives them a healthier work-life balance. Today, our offices are constantly on, it isn't the same as it was decades ago, when you left the office and work actually ended. Today, most of us can work at any hour wherever we are located, so it makes sense that the line is starting to blur between work and life. But it stands to reason that working from home can help redefine -- or at the very least, rebalance -- that line” (White, 11). It is easy to work at home if a person got sick is just simply feeling under the weather. When working from home, there is no opportunity to compare yourself to colleagues, it is difficult to estimate the level of the professional growth or its absence. According to Forbes magazine, “To be successful in your career, you need to be engaged with your company. If you work for a big corporation like Yahoo, the office and culture is constantly changing. You need to be an active member of the corporate culture and participate in team-building opportunities to stay connected. You also need to be in the same room as someone to fully understand that person’s energy and focus. Not to mention your relationships with co-workers and supervisors will be stronger if you spend time face to face. This is also important in a co-working space, as you need to stay up to date with your competition and continue to learn trends in your industry” (Kopicki). Simply put, there is no opportunity to learn from the colleagues and the management, to master new methods and new ideas.
On the other hand, there are quite a few disadvantages to face when considering working from home. For some people it might not even be that much of a deal, however, it is important to realize what challenges might arise. Home office is not really for young careerists. At home, it is impossible to show the organizing qualities, ability to generate the ideas, and to work in team. There is no opportunity to quickly and effectively solve working problems by direct communication with employees. It is difficult to organize yourself, to force to work regularly, but not on the days when you’re in a good and motivational mood. There is no need to watch the appearance, a hairstyle and clothes, and in the long run, it results in untidiness. Next, there is no simple companionship with people at work, exchange of opinions, and collective discussion of problems. To understand where it is better to work, it is necessary to try different ways. At the beginning of the career seek to work in collective, with the advent of children in a family to obey circumstances and to work at home. When children grow up and will begin to become independent, then it is easier to work as comfortable as possible. Work at home in some plans oppresses the person due to the lack of communication with colleagues and an invariable surrounding situation (Eng et al. 104-120). Some people regularly meet numerous friends, therefore there is no special need for communication.
All in all, even though there are a lot of arguing going on about being a stay at home mom who is working at home, nobody can deny that working from home has a lot more benefits than disadvantages. It is a great way to make money and enjoy the convenience of one’s own house.
