What is the purpose of government?
A government may be defined as the control and administration of a public policy at a specific political unit at a certain time. It comprises a system that functions and exercises power. This is often done through customs, institutions as well as laws within a given state. A government is also involved in the management of public finances and resources. Socialistic government is that which believes in the state being controlled centrally with the state owning all the resources. Libertarian government on the other hand is that which allows citizen the right to own property. The most preferred mode of government is the libertarian mode. This is because everyone is at liberty to do as he wishes as opposed to the dictatorship oriented mode of socialistic government.
The U.S government is divided into 3 categories, the legislative, judiciary and executive arms of the government. Each of these branches has their own specific functions. The executive is responsible for putting into effect the laws of the land. It comprises the president, vice president, departmental heads as well as independent bureaus’ heads. The judiciary comprises of the court system and they function to implement the laws. The legislative that comprises of the senate and the House of Representatives function in the law making and amending (Michael 2012).
The government of the United States has six major functions: Forming an ideal union by ensuring justness across all the states of America. They also establish justice by ensuring protection to those who respect and adhere to the law and giving punishments to those who go against the laws. It also ensures domestic tranquility by ensuring its entire citizen live a dignified life. The government also ensures security to its citizen by provision of the army. It also functions to promote the general welfare of the citizens by ensuring all the citizens irrespective of class are represented equally by any laws of the country. The government also offers right to life, liberty and freedom to own property. It secures the property of its citizens.
As much as U.S has one of the best securities in the entire world, it faces a series of challenges that may make them prone to attacks from different sources. For instance, there is threat from climate change. The National Research council has warned that there may occur unpredictable crises that are induced by climate change. This may include disasters such as hurricanes and tsunamis. Nuclear weapons being the most harmful of all weapons are being manufactured. Nine countries that include U.S, Russia, Iran and North Korea currently posses nuclear weapons with Iran and North Korea recently putting them to test is a threat to the safety of the Americans.
Another big threat to the security of U.S is the unexpected attacks and wars. Given U.S’s committed fight against terrorism, it has turned out to creating more and more enemies with some countries that include Somalia and Pakistan as well as Afghanistan among other countries. This has led to some terrorists making plans on attacking U.S and in some incidences these plans have succeeded. For instance the attacks on the American embassies killing several people are a security threat to the citizens. Moreover, the recent explosions during the world marathon in Boston (Cynthia, 2008).
However to my opinion, there are solutions to majority of this insecurity. First and foremost, with the climate change, very little can be done to prevent that, however, security can be enhanced by creating awareness on the abrupt crises that may come as a result of this.
Regarding terrorism, the government must invest on creation and improvement of the anti terrorism facilities. The government has to be above the rest when it comes to counter attacking the enemies. Nuclear threats however could be the most challenging problem faced by the government function of ensuring security. However it should try and enhance a good relationship with other powerful countries, sign treaties that would limit the negative use of these weapons.
The solutions suggested above may be of help since they will imply that the citizens live in peace without fear of any attack that may enhance their loss of lives or property. Creating awareness for example will ensure that the citizens build houses that are safer during the natural calamities as well as evading the prone places on the sight of symptoms of an attack. Treaties and a good working relationship with other countries I assume would limit the chances of war between U.S and these countries hence no use of the nuclear weapons (Howard, 2005).
Other people may have their own opinions regarding how to solve these problems. Some may claim that the government should just go and suppress the countries that manufacture the weapons. The challenge with this however is the fact that it may bring commotion amongst the countries hence causing war.
Conclusively, it may be said that however much the U.S may be developed it still faces a lot of security challenges that may make it prone to fall at any given time. The government has to thus be on its toes in reacting to the issues that may influence their security.
