[Institution’s Name]
The movie, ' The Princess Bride' is a fanatical fairy tale based on the novel by William Goldman. The book as by name is a romantic narrative, yet other elements of the tale enhance the reader's interest in the reading. This includes the fancy, fighting and decisive points, such the point when the outlaw Vizzini is offered two goblets of wine and must determine which one holds the poison. Herein, the writers utilizes the game theory to add in the interest of reader with logic and script. Likewise, in the referred movie a scene called battle of wits employs complex yet interesting amalgamation of intelligence when two goblets of wine are being offered to Vizzini foretelling him about the presence of Iocane powder in one of the glasses. The character is then bound to make a choice on the bet of Princess as a reward. The referred approach is regarded as game theory, which is successfully incorporated in the plot of 'the Princess Bride' to stir the mind of the reader. The mould of the game has four choices with consequent situations that can substantiate the payoff. These could best be illustrated with the support of the table drafted below;
Vizzini's position; In Case, The Poison is in A's Cup;
Vizzini, the wit is not aware of the placement of poison in either of the goblet. Thus, the presented matrixes are drafted keeping in view the available options. The obligation of the presented matrix is that a player can drink from one cup only. Hence, opposite strategy is functional in the play. Hence, (n/a) is mentioned over the options that require the two players drink from the same goblet. However, pertaining to the view that Vizzini is very unaware of the blend of poison in either cup, thus there is no evident strategy to draft a clue for locating the cup with poison. Consequently, the chances of right choice are same as much as the chances of wrong choices. Therefore, the game is more a play of luck than that of wit.
Vizzini's position; In Case, The Poison is in B's Cup;
On the other hand, Wesley the person who is offering the goblet has planned the play long before the conduct and has grown immune to Iocane powder. In short, Wesley is sure about his immunity against Iocane powder and has placed poison in both the goblets to eliminate any chance of survival of Vizzini. Hence, pertaining to the actual situation the matrix displays the illustrated situation;
Actual Situation (A is immune of Poison and Poison is at both the cups)
Consequently, no matter what the choice of Vizzini is in the game play, he will end into a negative payoff with his life.
The illustrations of the game play can be related to a few of the academic strategies that includes dominant strategy and Nash Equilibriums. Considering, the position of Vizzini, dominant strategy or Nash Equilibrium cannot be related to the situation, as Vizini will twist his strategy, according to his choice with a view that poison is in cup 'A' or cup "B'. The situation herein, is more like an example of "matching pennies". The only difference for an exact match with "matching pennies' situation is that all the available strategies are not opted because of one player cannot take both the drink or the two players cannot drink from one cup. Eventually, the two illustrated matrices that appear to be the same are considered as two because of available choices and consequences. At the same time, betrayal is another prevailing factor of the game, as Wesley is immune to the poison and have placed poison in both the cups to eliminate any chance of survival for Vizzini. Thus, the deceiving twist of the game play is more an element of interest than aptitude for the reader. Precisely, even though the chapter containing the illustration of an event is named "The Battle Of Wits", the game play gives it more an impression of "The Choice of Luck" in which Vizzini is at loss since the beginning of happening giving the incident an essence with no choice of wit but deception. Precisely, the insight of the game play reveals a contrast strategy of what depicted in the play
