Marriage is one of the important institutions in society. In fact, marriage in society is central and ubiquitous. It is worth noting that marriage is a platform of various socialization agents in the community. People in society get married regardless of their class, religion, ethnicity, or education. There are various types of marriage in the world today. Gay marriage is a type of marriage that has undergone various changes. Gay marriage refers to the union between two individual who is of the same biological sex or the same gender. Gay marriages are the controversial issues in the world today. Gay marriage is recognized in some countries while it is opposed in many countries. The proposers and those who oppose of gay marriages base their arguments on political, religious, and constitutional platforms. In the general perspective, there are various reasons why gay marriage should be legalized.
Proponents of gay marriages assert that the constitution should protect and recognize the right to marry for all people. The essence of freedom to marry tend to conflict with protecting religious freedom (Flores 284). The implementation of the constitution in support of gay marriage may affect religious values and norms. Therefore, gay marriage should be legalized in society since it is part and freedom of individuals.
Gay marriages unite people from different backgrounds and family settings. Therefore, those in support of gay marriages believe that it enriches the community. Gay marriages are stable and have longevity compared to other marriages (Wilson 231). It is worth noting that gay marriages bring individual in society more closely. These are because it is based on deep commitments from the parties involved.
Personal choices are supported by constitution in various states. People have the right and freedom to make their personal decisions. Gay marriage partners should be allowed to enjoy their right to choose whom they want to marry (Wilson 234). In modern society, marriage need to focus on the relationship and commitment people share rather than sexuality. Sexuality is just a feature of human beings, and it should not be used to dictate marriage.
Individuals in gay marriages trust and love each other and their union do not harm the society. There are several features and issues in a society that tend to be a threat to human existence in society (Flores 288). Gay marriage does not threaten the society in any way. In fact, gay marriages do not affect heterosexual marriages; hence, it should be allowed in society. Gay marriages incorporate individuals who are committed to each other, and they comprehend their mission in the union.
In the modern era, discrimination is one of the condemned practices. Proponents of gay marriages believe that illegalizing gay marriages are a form of discrimination (Bailey & Peoples 22). It is ironical to assert that the constitution and laws are streamlined towards eliminating discrimination, yet gay marriages remain discriminated. In fact, others claim that legalizing gay marriage in society is allowing love and peace to reign. Critically, gay marriages should enjoy their rights, and the law should be in the forefront in protecting them against discriminatory allegations.
Recently, organizations in support of gay marriages focused on legalizing and protecting gay marriages. These organizations assert that gay marriages should enjoy all sorts of benefits enjoyed by those in other forms of marriages. Heterosexual partners enjoy medical benefits and other family related incentives from the government (Bailey & Peoples 34). Gay spouses should also get access to medical care, protection, and right to inherit property. On the same note, the constitution should give marriage a global definition that meets the needs and demands of all human beings.
The transformation of gay marriage in the world has taken wide changes. In the past, gay marriages were an impossible dream, but in the modern society it is inevitable. Gay marriages in most accounts have become unprecedented phenomena. Since the legalization of gay marriages in Netherlands in the year 2001, gay marriages have spread globally to approximately 20 states and 19 countries (Wolf n.p). This spread is a precipice of what is expected in the future. Supporters of gay marriages believe that it is a cause in society whose time has come.
Most of the families in the world are missing a father or a mother figure. Others go through various challenges in marriage, which may end up rendering childless. Heterosexual couples who cannot bear children have the option of adopting (Wilson 231). The same situation should be applied to gay marriages. The essence of procreation in marriages are believed to have been detached. Gay marriage couples should enjoy absolute meaning of marriage regardless of the fact that they cannot bear children (Hurley n.p). In critical analysis, gay marriage is a strategy that helps in reducing the number of orphans in the world. Making gay marriages part of society enables them to adopt easily and provide care for orphans. Gay marriage makes absolute sense in the modern society.
On the other hand, gay marriage is a controversial issue in the modern society because it is believed to be against the natural law. Marriage is believed to be rooted in human nature; this means that it is controlled by the natural law. Gay marriage tends to circumnavigate the purpose of sexuality and sexual act, which is a violation of the morals drawn through natural law. Gay marriages turn the moral wrong in society to a civil right. Scholars also assert that gay marriages in society diminish the paternal commitment and expectations in society. Those opposing gay marriages believe that it undermines the real purpose of marriage and negatively hinder marriage as an institution (Wilson 229).
Religion is also one of the issues that those who oppose gay marriage base their argument. Gay marriages have created a battle divide between people from different religion. Gay marriage is against biblical teachings. (Wilson 232) According to Christianity, heterosexual marriage is the only blessed marriage that was set by God. In Oregon, gay marriages have divided people within the catholic fraternity. Some assert that they support same-sex marriage because they are Catholics and push for equality while other believe that it is against the Biblical teaching. Oregon is believed to be of the states that support gay marriages this year (Ganga n.p). In a decade ago, some voted to change the definition of marriage as a blending between one woman and one man.
In general analysis, gay marriage should be legalized in society regardless of the controversies. The current trend of gay marriage legalization in various countries and states is a clear indication of the dynamic nature of marriage. For many decades, gay marriage has existed and since then it has remained controversial. Nevertheless, many people continue to enter into gay marriage. The support of gay marriage is based on freedom and constitutional rights, while those opposing based their arguments in religion.
