Description and social roles among boys and girls
China’s national views on gender roles between girls and boys have been challenged over the years, and the video describes the problem faced in the country. Girls and boys have been treated differently, and there is a strong need for equality advocacy to be able to attain gender balance. In the country, women assumed a subordinate role than the male gender that is often considered superior to the female gender. However, today women have transitioned from the passive wives role to the passive workers role though this is yet to be attained in many regions of the country. Individuals prefer the boy child than the girls, but the situation is slowing changing as advocates call for equality in both genders. Women have no power over the men making it quite difficult for them to assume leadership positions, as their power is limited only within the family context.
Marriage perception and problems faced by Chinese men today
For many families, giving birth to a male child to carry the family’s name is a great achievement. This is the primary reason why the boy child is preferred over the girl child. Men, especially the first-born sons, need to remain at home with their elderly parents and help them care for themselves during old age. The woman, on the other hand, is expected to join her husband once she is married, and therefore, she has to move to stay with her husband. Thus, the married couple is supposed to live with their parents. After marriage, the man is considered to be the head of the family, and he is the bread winner. The woman has to stay at home to take care of the homestead and the young children. Being a man in the nation comes with a lot of challenges and responsibilities. The man is also expected to take control of every aspect of the family’s life, and he is responsible for continuing the particular family bloodline. Men are supposed to be responsible, dominant, and assertive as compared to their female counterparts. With the government introduction of the one-child policy, families did all they could to ensure that they got a boy child as he is more respected causing the gender imbalance.
Differences between gender roles and experiences in the rural areas and cities
The gender roles and experiences in cities is changing as city dwellers begin to focus more on money and education. Women living in the main cities have a privilege of attending school and choosing their profession of choice just as the boy child does. As a result, girls have taken top leadership positions and careers and have been able to empower themselves. This has left the rural areas behind where gender imbalance continues to be a great challenge. Moreover, many rural villages have been over populated by poor single men who have been unable to find wife’s to marry as a result of the existing gender imbalance. Thus, the issue of gender roles and equity has become a contentious concern in the country.
Influence of the Chinese music and gender roles similarities and differences with the United States
The contemporary Chinese entertainment industry such as music and drama shows plots are often constructed around the dynamics of the stereotyped gender roles justifying the problem even further. However, some shows and music try to bridge the existing gender equality gap in an effort of solving the problem. In the United States, citizens value the boy child just like in China, but equality between the sexes has been achieved in the nation. It is, therefore, important for the country to empower the girl child more to be able to attain gender equality.
