As mentioned in the movie "Helvetica," typography is a "tool for creating order" (Hustwit). There is a vast choice of fonts one can use for specific purposes: there are fonts designed for business communication and ones for light message, ones looking serious and strict and others looking fanciful and funny. Each font has its peculiarities which help you express your feelings or forward the implied message with the best understanding of the reader. Some fonts make the reader alert by their briskness and lack of fancy features, while others arouse the readers' good disposition my looking mild and dreamlike. The text itself does not do all the job - it is immensely assisted by the font used for it.
Among all the fonts, Georgia stands out for its clarity, legibility and solidity. It lacks the fantasy and monospace, and it is not a cursive type of font. However, that it probably what makes it so appealing. Georgia font is more of a traditional type. It has got serifs, that is, at the ends of the letter strokes there are embellishments. Unlike sans serif fonts, Georgia's serifs are more fanciful and exuberant. They are used for adding to reading legibility and for boosting the visual distinction of the readers.
The symbols of Georgia font are clear and straightforward, and the text looks substantial and serious. Still, the serifs add some romanticism and give a touch of passion. When turned into italics, Georgia suggests some lightness of thought and looks soft and delicate. When turned into bold type, it looks almost as monospace and presupposes some kind very solid reading.
Looking at the text in this font, I am overwhelmed with feelings of confidence and serenity. The peace of mind presupposed by Georgia brings me back to my childhood and paints a picture of some placid meadow, bright sunshine and children playing in the greed grass. Or it could be another picture - of a winder morning, with dazzling snow and children sledding and making snowmen and having lots of charming childish fun.
Another set of feelings that the font brings about is connected with history. When I look at the text in Georgia font, I imagine some grand historical figure sitting in his study, reading some map and deciding on a major movement which would change the course of history of his nation and maybe even of the whole human race.
If I was to choose where to apply Georgia font, I guess my first suggestion would be books for children. It does not lack clarity and legibility, and at the same time it adds something romantic, adventurous, something that would make a little eager reader open the book and crave for absorbing the story from the beginning till the end, and even reread it from time to time in order to savor its fancy and beauty.
Another use of this font could be in some traditional newspapers or journals and titles of traditional shops or cafés. The font presupposes some confidence and reliability. When one sees a paper or a shop title in these letters, one has a good feeling that he can get a true message here - either it is the news column or fresh bread and buns. Tradition combined with confidence - that is what makes Georgia font so appealing and lovable.
Whatever message you want to send, it will look much better with a correctly chosen font with suitable typographical features. One should never underestimate the meaning of the font with its specific elements. It is a whole story, a great set of tools engraving the words into a fanciful picture, inviting the reader into the world of a printed word.
