Question 1
According to Mauk (2014), the older population is defined as a group comprised of individuals aged 65 years and above. This group typically faces various challenges ranging from health to aspects of their social lives. For this reason, it is important to provide adequate resources to such individuals so as to improve their quality of life. In this case, various learning resources can be provided to David. Since he faces a dehydration problem, as a nurse, one can provide relevant resources on how he can improve the nature and quantity of his fluid intake to alleviate the problem. Also, Mauk (2014) indicate that older individuals are more prone to develop illnesses compared to younger people. Therefore, resources that focus on healthy living that encompasses diet and exercise should be provided to David so he can implement them after his release from the hospital.
Question 2
Tolson, Booth, and Schofield (2011) explain that older people are susceptible to dehydration as a result of the physiological changes accompanied by the aging process. This problem is made worse especially when affected individuals have some sort of cognitive impairment or physical frailty, which increases the risk of dehydration. In David’s case, he takes a limited amount of fluids, which is not advised. Therefore, he should embrace various practices, such as taking small amounts of fluids throughout the day. Also, he can take fruits that have high water content, and if he does not like the taste of water, he can make some flavored water with fruits such as oranges, limes, or lemons.
Question 3
Mauk (2014), indicate that older people who may refrain from participating in certain activities they identify as ‘for old people’ should be advised on discarding these stereotypes, as well as eliminating generalizations made in regards to old age. Given that David spends most his time alone following the death of his wife, he can undertake various activities to stay busy, such as getting in touch with his hobbies. For instance, in terms of traveling, he can get in touch with agencies that provide programs meant for senior citizens. Also, he can spend his time volunteering in causes he believes in. this will create and maintain his enthusiasm and productivity, making him feel important as he can contribute in positive and meaningful ways.
