Figure 1: Population Distribution
The demographic structure of San Jose is made up of approximately 7.3% of people aged below 5 years, 82.6% between 18 years to 64 years and 10.10% over 65 years (Bureau). For Nevada County, 4.40% of the population are aged below 5 years, 76.20% between 18 years to 64 years and 19.4% above 65 years old. For California State, 6.8% of the population are aged below 5 years, 81.80% are aged between 18 years to 64 years while 11.40% are aged above 65 years old (Bureau).
There seems to be a similarity in the number of people aged between 18 years to 64 years across the State, County, and City. For California State, this age group constitutes approximately 81.80 % of the whole State population (Bureau). For Nevada County, this group makes up approximately 76.20% of the whole County population. For San Jose City, the number of people aged between 18 years to 64 years makes up approximately 82.60% of the whole population (Bureau). Generally, there is a similarity in population distribution across all the age structures for California State and San Jose City. The figures for Nevada County deviate slightly from those of the State and City. For instance, the population of people aged 65 years and above is highest in Nevada at 19.40% compared to 11.4 % and 10.10% for California State and San Jose City respectively (Bureau).
The difference in the age structure distribution across the different geographical scales can be attributed to factors that are local to those regions. For instance, the low percentage of people aged under 5 years in Nevada can be attributed to low birth rates. The high population of people aged between 18 years and 64 years in the State and City can be due to the high quality of life and low mortality rates. Moreover, the age group represents the baby boomer age groups. As the baby boomers grow old, their children (echo boomers) enter into the same age group. Even if there are low fertility rates among the baby boomers, the echo boomers still facilitate a mini population explosion, due to the fact that there were a very large population of prospective baby boomers. The decrease in the older and younger population may have been caused by deaths of the old generation inability to slow birth rates from the younger population.
