Woolsey, Brittany. "Reporter's Notebook: Did I Really Get Hypnotized At The OC Fair? Yes And No". Daily Pilot. N.p., 2016. Web. 25 July 2016.
The article, “Reporter's Notebook: Did I really get hypnotized at the OC Fair? Yes and no”, was written by a reporter Brittany Woolsey. It was published in Los Angeles Times on the 23rd of July 2016.
In this article, Brittany Woolsey writes about her experience of taking part in hypnotist Mark Yuzuik's show. Despite trying to follow the instructions, she was not able to be hypnotized. The reporter restates Mark Yuzuik's words that hypnotized people can still fully control their actions. Although the author has some good points, the article does not include the description of the hypnosis process.
Before getting on stage, Brittany was wondering if the hypnosis really worked. “The answer? It didn't work completely. At least not for me.” (Woolsey) She claims that other participants were completely hypnotized. What was special about Brittany? She had not had a good rest the night before, so her mind was distracted. Yuzuik told the reporter, that all hypnotists did was relax the conscious mind. He also said that to be hypnotized, anyone has to be willing and in a good mood. Hypnotized people knew, that everything was unreal, but still behaved the way hypnotist made them to. So hypnosis does not mean having any control, it is only an illusion.
This article is written clear, in a simple language, and it gave a useful explanation of hypnosis impact. The main point of the article is that hypnotist does not control the human mind. It would be even more useful to give some points on hypnosis process. The article is instructive for people, who are interested in this topic and it is also very beneficial for psychology students.
Personally, I used to believe that during hypnosis a human loses control on oneself, but this article has changed my mind. I never was a fan of supernatural abilities nor interested in hypnosis. I was skeptical to those activities and thought that people only use hypnosis for crime. For instance, in the beginning of the article, when Brittany wrote that hypnosis has not worked on her, I was not surprised. It was obvious to me that hypnosis would not work for me, too. But when I read the whole article, my mind has changed. This article convinced me, that while being hypnotized, people are aware of their actions and can control themselves. Yuzuik uses his skills to help people lose weight or, for example, give up smoking. Now my opinion has changed and I see a lot of cases for hypnosis to be used.
In conclusion, despite losing some details, this article was beneficial and informative for me. I am looking forward for new Brittany`s works.
