The prompts revolve around participating on a cause that will change the lives of millions of girls around the globe. The videos, although short, conveyed a powerful message about the reality that young girls are facing everyday. Poverty ties girls into a cycle of destruction, where they longer have any say on the direction of their lives. I believe that people can really do something to cut this horrid chain of destruction. However, it will difficult because at some countries poverty is already embedded in their culture.
The videos also reflect the continuing abuse of women and children. Girls are looked at as commodities and objects; they are no longer treated like human beings. Their wills and dreams are set aside because they carry the burden of lifting their families from poverty. It is sad to realize that girls at a very tender age of twelve are subjected to marriage all because of poverty. Prostitution also adds to the dark cycle that girls need to face. Since they give birth at the very young age, they need to provide for their offspring. Due to the lack of educational attainment because they married young, they are forced to sell their bodies to earn. Girls are trapped in choices that they do not want to make.
No one wants their young daughters to grow up as slaves to poverty. Society created this havoc, and only society can heal it as well. It is a daunting task to break a cycle embedded deep into the roots of history, but in the process giving a better future for young girls. We are privileged not to experience such lives, but we must use that privilege to aid others who were not as fortunate. The girl effect is a powerful campaign that prompts people to do something and change the course of the future. Let us not be deaf to the cries of young girls around the world, let us join in the efforts of securing and providing them with better tomorrows.
