Introduction
Airline alliances have grown from the co-operation between just two airlines to massive, ambitious projects between many airlines that traverse the globe. Moreover, airline alliances have experienced changes whereby some firms have joined, and others exited them. The majority of airline companies nowadays have it hard when selecting the best carrier to join amongst the three major airline alliances today: Oneworld, SkyTeam and Star Alliance. The three alliances are compared below by differentiating their membership, the location of their headquarters, their primary regions of service and their operations and management details. Furthermore, their comparison is guided by economic data for each alliance.
Comparison of the Alliances
Conclusion
Star Alliance, being the global airline alliance with the most members and the largest fleet, could easily be regarded as the best alliance among the three. In addition, some of the world’s best airlines such as United, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines are part of its massive team. The large membership also makes it the alliance with the most significant number of lounges, and they have major hubs in the central cities across the globe too. The planes also make the most flights to major world destinations since the fleet is large and the partnership is huge too. However, it would be a poor choice for traveling to regions such as Australia and South America. Additionally, its executive management team is not as excellent and effective as that for an alliance like Oneworld. The fact that the latter’s Board is selected from its member airlines make it possible for decision-making to be distributed equally, and it promotes positive relationships as every member contributes equally.
