Global Inequality, Sex and Gender
Global stratification is the classification of people, counties, and communities into groups. This is done when these nations and communities connect more through trade, infrastructure, natural resources, internet and telephone. This often brings about the social hierarchs which is formed when there is an occurrence of global development. The perspectives of Global stratification that are discussed are the modernization rise and the legacy of colonization. Rise in modernization states that we are all heading to a common goal hence a positive future altogether. For instance this happened in the US and Europe where they experienced displacement and poverty back then , and later came to live good comfortable lives and so that is the same future that awaits people in the developing countries. The other perspective is the legacy of colonialism. This one usually occurs when one foreign power maintains the economic, political, social and cultural domination. The dependence of the colonies on more industrialized nations on everything including their investment kept them under the rule of their masters. Immanuel Wallerstein views that the economic systems of the globe are divided between industrialized nations and those that control the wealth. He saw that the core countries controlled the wealth of the non core economies. This resulted to intertwining of global economy due to the non core countries being weak.
Stratification around the world has also been discussed in details in the topics income and wealth, social mobility and poverty. The gap between the poor and the rich is widening each and every day in different countries. For instance in the income and wealth, in 18 countries a ten percent of the population receives at least 40 percent of the total income in the country. This has been led to the fact that most wealth is held by rich countries such as Europe, North America and rich Asian nations. Women have also been found to have been facing significant obstacles in the developing countries. All these have led to classification of people into either rich or poor. Stratification has also been seen in poverty; where it has been seen that eighty percent of the people have been living in very bad conditions. For instance most of the world’s population lives below $10 in a day. This shows that most of the people live in poverty and this poverty has been distributed unequally. Due to this poverty the UN have made plans for 2015 project to alleviate hunger, Child mortality, gender equality and education for everyone.
Under the section of working for change in women movements, there are three waves which are the first, second and third waves. These waves are the fights that people have fought to promote women in the in political, economy and other areas. Women haven’t mostly been given any opportunities, so this led to development of feminism movement waves. The second movement was started in 1960 and came into full being in 1970. The main issue that the political activism where women were encouraged to involve themselves in politics. This was to empower women to establish their own liberation. The consciousness of the groups was also formed to elevate awareness in women to encourage sisterhood. This was done through the problems they passed together as women. They also dealt with the reproductive issues that women battle with like abortion. The third wave started in 1990 as difference celebration including the difference in gender, sexuality, ethnicity and class. In this wave it believed that feminism has a varied range of ideas. The first one in the stand point theory where it states that one understands the world how it is fashioned by the place he has in it. The second one is the intersectionality theory which states that our experience is shaped by the point of intersection of multiple identities which shape each other.
In the section of gender and inequality, women have experienced inequality. In the U.S women have been involved in inequality in certain areas; these areas are like the income where women earn less than men do. Men always benefit in the field of female occupation while women are disadvantaged in the male occupation. This gender gap is still there even after controlling age, marital status, work experience, specialization and the working hours per day. There is still home and work where it has been proved that women do much of house work than men. Even where the women are working they still come back home and do the house chores. Women spend fewer hours in leisure time than men since them always do a lot of housework and still combine it with work.
