The focus of this article is on the topic of global warming and the discussion regarding the successions and failures that the current society will live in face in dealing with the environmental problems and issues. The reading that is of reference for this discussion is cited from the book Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed by Jared Diamond. The particulars are borrowed from the 16th chapter of the 4th section of the book, The World as a Polder: What Does It All Mean to Us Today? The overall point portrayed by book and a referred film - An Inconvenient Truth are to educate the public about the ruthlessness of the climate crisis.
Global warming is a very vital and important issue in the current modern day world. This is why there is need for environmental conservation and its prevention form pollution of energy, the photosynthetic ceiling, toxic chemicals, and atmospheric changes which in the long run degrade the environs. The general idea of keeping the environment clean and free of pollution is aimed at conserving the current natural resources for future use, for example, fresh water, farmlands, natural forests and the sea organisms (fish) that act as a natural source of food to human beings. If these resources are depleted then in the long run we will not be able to sustain human need for sea food millions of years to come. Environmental maintenance and increased conservational techniques through the practice of farming all comprising of horticultural, crops and animal are advisable for the sustaining the environmental needs and expectations of human life.
In his book, Jared Diamond states and explains that ever increasing imbalance in the food chain will subsequently affect the productivity of the land and water bodies due to the fast exhaustion of the natural underground aquifers. Environmental discipline with fresh water should be highly encouraged since the fresh water shortage around the world is ever increasing and the desalinization of sea water has proven to be very expensive to implement.
There has been a record high of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere recorded in human history and this keeps on increasing. Global warming is highly caused by the depletion and distortion of the Ozone layer which allows the infiltration of UV rays. The figure below depicts a graphical interpretation of the levels of CO2 over the past decades and there steady increase over the years.
Given the above graphical representation one can determine that a continuation of this will constantly compromise the atmospherically stable layers in the long run thus increasing global warming. The movie documentary in reference shows and highlights to us the inevitable effects of the increasing global warming which include the melting of the ice caps in the artic regions of the globe, subsequently, affecting the artic natural habitats hence causing migration of animals like the polar bear. Global warming has caused natural calamities ranging from floods to tsunamis that have claimed multiple fatalities.
Conclusively, the conservation of the environment starts from the responsibilities taken by the governments around the world and the policies implemented by these governments’ to promote environmental preservation and prevent its pollution. I strongly agree with the necessities for the societal virtues that are aimed at reassuring the environment that we live in as human beings since this is the only planet in the universe known to support human life.
