The article the ‘Draining of Lesotho’ by Haynie Devon on July, 25th 2016 is a clear illustration of the impacts of global warming in multiple areas across the world. Juliette Letotokoto, a farmer in Lesotho, watches her farm which has lost its usual green color and instead is replaced by a pale brown shade. She used to fetch up to three bags of produce, but due to the lack of rains, she can hardly fill a single bag of produce.
Lesotho, which is a small mountain kingdom surrounded by South Africa, was the worst hit by the 2015 drought, which was caused by the El Nino phenomenon that led to a 47 percent decline in maize harvest, which is the country’s staple food. The United Nations speculates that up to 50 percent of the country’s population is going to be in great need of relief food up to April 2017. The director of the Southern Africa El Nino emergency response, Paul Sitnam, says that even though starvation is yet to be reported, it is highly expected in the next few months.
For the Lesotho nationalities, Basotho, drought will lead to the lack of water, forcing people and livestock to revert to risky sources of water which are likely to cause chronic illnesses. This is despite the fact that the country has plenty of water, which is directed to South Africa following an agreement between the two countries where Lesotho’s water would be used in South African mines, and in return Lesotho would receive millions of dollars and electricity. At the time climate change was a mere speculation and Lesotho’s Rivers had plenty of water.
Southern Africa is one of the worst affected areas of the climate change with high temperatures and inconsistent rainfall. The weather conditions are severe in Lesotho with both summers and winters being extremely cold, and despite the dwindling water resources in Lesotho, Lesotho cannot stop giving water to South Africa. Long-term deals are especially harmful to the community members, and both positive and negative outcomes should be accessed properly before getting into such agreements.
