Globalization as a process of transformation on economy brought many changes to Russia’s economy and society. These changes were either good or bad but Russians suffered them both because it affected their culture and economic status. Every country must have gone through changes of transformation because of globalization. To the third world countries, globalization is helping them get closer to the developed world as they get more information on technology, better economy and better ways of socialization through education and civilization.
Most of these transformations resemble the dramatic changes that Russia received because of globalization. In the first decade of transformation, Russia got disappointments on the economic results, which brought about increments in poverty and macroeconomic instability as well as inequality. Many scholars will understand this as results of Russia’s globalization opening. This report will discuss the impact of globalization on Russia. It is from there that the same scholars will understand that globalization was not the only factor responsible for economic crisis but also a combination of centrally planned economic legacy together with policy choice errors and mistakes.
The wrong choices and planned economy came immediately after the transformation began. Earlier attempts of transforming Russia by applying a few guidelines using shock therapy failed because of involvedness of institutional change. Russians dubbed the shock therapy and applied guidelines Washington consensus. This is an inevitable consequence of globalization and does not mean a market economy failure as trendy misconceptions would imply. This report will provide an alternative view of globalization including Russia’s policy implications.
In the recent times, globalization has been one of the most debated subjects and to some countries including Russia; it is one of the best things happening to the world through its proponents. However, opponents have opposed this and have gone ahead to label it as neo-imperialism. Globalization has however played a big role in changing lives of people in millions and having in mind that there are many challenges in the same the job it has done is commendable. It should be clear that although there are many challenges that accompany globalization, there are numerous advantages and positive effects as well. Technology is one area that globalization has influenced and this has been both positive and negative but the positives outweigh the negatives (Acosta & Federico, 654).
With regard to technology, globalization has a great impact, which included use of modern tools of communication and weapons. While many Russians assume that innovations happen in western countries like the United States, technology also came to Russia because of globalization. If there were no technology in Russia, there would be no information on new inventions and medicine. The two would have remained in the countries that introduced them and no other country would ever benefit. Technology has also affected the political and economic knowledge, which has spread wide and far. From any country in the world, one can access the politics and economy of Russia with the use of technology and because of globalization. The main function of the code is ruling over the cultural rules applicable to commercial marketing. The code has a design to encourage the consumption of products and services. It promotes institutions, ideas or concepts. It is for the general welfare of the public and community. Some examples of the most important principles recognized in the code are cultural and educational development
All the professionals involved in advertising activities observe the cultural behavior standards. It includes the advertisers, media broadcasters, advertising agencies, journalist and all other professionals in communication taking part in the process of advertisement. The general cultural rules are also applicable to specific main beliefs such as respect, decency, honesty, fear, superstition, violence and truthful presentation.
Other principles are comparative advertising, safety and accidents, protection of privacy, pollution and ecology, children and teenagers. There is also copyright and plagiarism, which protects creativity and originality. Some special categories fall under advertisement. These are rules that serve as exhibits. The main categories of advertisements are commercial ads, which is for selling goods and services. Under this category, anyone buying or selling goods or services have the permission to advertise. The other one is commonweal ads; this contains messages and information from social organization and the government. The third one is the regional ads where messages go to certain geographical areas on target (Acosta & Federico, 234).
People say that the population of Russia comprises of many blacks who came from slavery in Africa. However, one aspect of Russian advertisement that puzzles many is that blacks never appear on these advertisements because of globalization. There is a cruel logic of economy to this. Some say that the lighter you are, the more likely you are to come from a rich background. Since many advertising agents want to go by the culture of skin color, they tend to go light skin men and women leaving out the blacks. A culture runs across the region therefore communitarian has undergone change and many ads are now for blacks. They have the greater purchasing power as compared to the blacks.
A survey conducted revealed that most ads discriminate the black people. Initially, black people could only appear in ads as house helps or tea boys and gardeners. It has however changed since one can now see a black person in a fashion ad or even bank or pharmaceutical products commercial. This to some extent is collectivism. The reason behind that is that the black people started to migrate to the middle group. This made them an important consumer market and even the whites wanted to be like them. They had a class of their own that every one liked. Many of the advertisements are multi-racial (Acosta & Federico, 88).
Russia has a commercial responsibility and not a social responsibility. When it comes to commercial and advertisements, Russians show their communitarians culture in full. Communitarian is the culture that considers a group as the end and improves individual capacities as the means to that end. The culture helps in development and growth (Agunias & Dovelyn, 224).
As for trade and integration, globalization has revolutionized Russia in terms of how it does trade. Integration with other foreign countries has now become easier and cheaper. How can one forget about the impact of foreign trade on Russian economy because of globalization? Even in the olden times, comparative and integration advantage has always been a factor. Trade and integration originated during the times of early kingdoms but due to globalization, it has become common in both Russia and the rest of the world. In the past, Russian people could use force and fight to get what they wanted unlike today when they have integrated with many countries for the purposes of trade. Globalization has brought about World Trade Organization and other organizations of trade in the world and any country violating the rights of trade has to face the organization. In Russia, WTO has revolutionized and reorganized trade to become something admirable thus attracting more countries to integrate in trade.
Measures of globalization: migration, cooperation, remittances and regional integration
Off shoring and outsourcing have been a big problem in Russia since time immemorial but globalization has enhanced them. For the purposes of analyzing the social economic globalization impact, the report will focus of migration flows of people and remittances of the workers that have continued to rise over the last years particularly in Russia and other countries in the central Asian region. The bold elements in the subheading represent the major contemporary globalization elements. The report intends to touch on how people’s intensive flow and remittance inflow affects the social economic development in Russia. There is also another measure of globalization impact known as FDI or Foreign Direct Investment. This measure applies most in Russia because it is rich in natural resources and has skillful and inexpensive labor.
Russians can today travel from their country to other countries and go back to their country in the same day due to modernization of transport. Globalization has enabled them acquire aircrafts that go to different countries and at the same time transport their goods with ease and in time. So far, there has been no reported negative impact of the improved transportation unless in terms of security which is a major concern from all over the world.
Globalization has brought about environmental pollution where domestic and foreign industries pollute the environment. This has mostly impacted farmers who suffer loses due to chemical rain as a result of the fumes coming from the industries and waste thrown in to the rivers. Russia has seen many companies close down because of uncontainable competition from the outside world. Globalization allows imports and exports thus affecting workers, farmers and domestic companies who fail to meet the standards of the foreign countries and products.
Implication of globalization and its issues has had impacts in the past on international management practice. This is because a country like Russia is not able to make decisions on its own without consulting the international organizations. For a country to be in international trade, vetting has to be done by the World Trade Organization or other global organizations, which control international trade. Globalization has therefore lessened the work of managing international practice but burdened local companies, farmers and has created enormous impacts on the indigenous cultures (Agunias & Dovelyn, 456).
In conclusion, globalization has seen Russia evolve to better heights in many areas such as technology, education, transport and economy. It has also had negative impacts on many domestic companies cannot export and import things. Indigenous culture has gone away and what is left in Russia today is a mixture of cultural practices all in the name of globalization. Demographic groups and stakeholders are wondering what globalization is for but many are rejoicing the advantages it has brought along. For globalization to have a positive impact on a country, negative impacts must accompany it because it wipes the old ways of doing things and introduces new ones.
