The Concepts of Disconnection and Conflict
“A Favorable Quarter Edge” is an appropriate title for this particular compendium. This article encompasses major themes which highlight the concepts of disconnection and conflicts. In his article, Sam Morris talks about an instance of a forty six year old man with a great passion for writing. He describes his life as ending tragically at a time which he still had a great vision of passing on his knowledge through writing.
The concept of disconnection manifests itself in Morris’ article. To begin with, Meursault provides no account for his emotions when he finds out that the mother had died. However, he only mentions that he feels drowsiness. He animates the significance of his mother’s death and compares it to the objects which distract him from the significance of his mother’s death. The theme of disconnection comes in this situation where his experience and illustrations and when his mother dies completely differ with each other. There is no substantial relation between the events and as a result, his actions clouds the reader’s mind in comprehending the reaction or the effects of a mother’s death to a son.
Through his article, we can also identify the concept of conflict. Morris illustrates in his article on a couple of instances the need to identify the whereabouts of people he cares about. Through the character Camus, the author presents himself as having a strong wrestling moment with his creator. This can be seen when the man in this case stood to demand for justice and meaning from his maker. The man in this situation is struggling with a humanized world and as a result he is struggling and striving to cope up with the alienation and absurdity of life itself by trying to embrace what is left which is mortality. Some of these themes such as conflict bring out a spiritual resonation from deep within the human nature. Moreover, Camus reminds the theists that there is definitely a place in the intellectual life which must one way or another transcend and address how some of these things appear to people. He reminds the theists and the atheists that they both live in a world that is full of evil, and chaos in the society and the result is inevitable death. He also goes ahead to state that the world that the theists claim was made by God, is that same world which is characterized by the awful eventualities and uncertainties.
In the article busy trap, the persona in this case describes how most people claim to be too busy for other people. He describes how guilty such people feel whenever they are either not working or promoting their jobs and such likes of activities. He describes the urge that most people have while being busy doing something in the least. He even goes ahead to state that nowadays even the children get busy. They are busy because of the schedules that line up with classes and school work and when they get back home all they want to do is either do their homework or just sleep if they are tired. In a situation when they are not, they just stare at the television watching cartoon related programs. Therefore there is a total disconnection among people in the society especially when people do not have sufficient time for each other.
Tim Kreidler in the article Busy Trap, explains that we all boast of our lives and say how special we are at times and all we think about is the productivity of our efforts and avoiding to confront certain meaninglessness of the jobs we do. However, the author thinks about all these explanations as to why people keep themselves busy. This could just be a mere excuse for the people to have some time alone with them or rather do anything else but be with others. He goes ahead to explain that we humans in most cases invent our own problems and own up to them treating the problems like we did not have any other choice but to solve the problems first. The major conflict in this article comes in the part where the Kreidler speaks to the adults addressing them directly and telling them that most of the things that we often do never matters. All that matters is that we are never too busy or too tired. He even gives a viable example for the adults on how children strive to manage their schedules and they are not left to enjoy the sweetness of the free afternoons. Instead they are scheduled to be doing jobs and house chores or at times just doing school work. Therefore it is a wrong idea to keep saying that we are busy while in real sense we are not.
In the article, “The Joy of Quiet” Pico brings out the theme of disconnection when he accepted that he disconnects a lot. He goes ahead to say that the only time he is not disconnected is when he is in the house. This is because when he is in the house and a person needs him, they can find him a lot easier. However, any moment that he spends outside the house is a moment of disconnection for him. This is to say that at any given time that he was out of the house be it in an official capacity or just taking a walk, he still got very much disconnected from the others. Furthermore, the fact that he never had a phone to grant him a roaming access facilitated the theme of disconnection further.
Pico Iyer also presents himself as a talented writer living a complicated life which makes him travel from place to place. He writes that on her death bed, the woman said that everything that she had seen on earth only teaches her to believe in God and teaches her only to trust Him for whatever that is coming which has not been revealed to her yet. These sentiments bring a great conflict in the minds of people. This is after Issa had witnessed the death of approximately four children in infancy, his wife in child birth and himself had his body paralyzed. These are some of the significant indications that he had no point in believing that there is a better place for people like him. But despite all these occurrences, he still holds on to his belief and states that he will continue to believe in his maker and trust him to facilitate all that he has not seen in the future.
The three articles are brought together in different instances that facilitates the concepts of disconnection and conflict. They all talk about the same concepts but make different illustrations in the text which makes the true meaning and value of the statement, “Concepts of disconnection and conflict.” Through these illustrations, we see their significance and how these themes stems out in each and every article.
