Good A Major College Issue: Drinking Essay Example

One of the largest problems on college campuses has to be the consumption of alcohol. Heavy drinking is one of the perpetuated hallmarks of the college experience. Quite a number people go into college expecting to partake in partying and drinking. The problem is not drinking itself, but it is the amount in which college students drink. Inebriation can lead to so many negative experiences, and possibly impact a student’s life forever.
In college, students rarely drink for fun, they drink to get drunk. That is a problem, because they make the decision in advance to drink heavily. At that age, the long-term effects of drinking are rarely considered. Excessive drinking can also cause someone to become violently ill. It can even lead to alcohol poisoning and hospitalization. The scary part is that no one thinks it can happen to them.
Drinking can make a person more social. Alcohol has been known to make people more social. It releases inhibitions. Once inhibitions are lowered too much, then a person can become reckless. Some people are not themselves when they drink, and they do things that are outside of their character. This is where a lot of bad decisions are made. Often when students are drunk, they tend to do things and regret it the next morning.
Drunk people on a campus can cause so much trouble. This goes back to intoxication causing people to make bad decisions. At college parties, drunk people have no problem fighting. Usually fighting can cause some legal issues, and not to mention, someone could get hurt. Reality can be warped for some and they will feel like they can do ridiculous things such as: jump from roofs, swim in lakes, or even drive. The list of idiotic things to do while drunk is endless. There are also sexual assaults associated with drinking. There are no winners when drunkenness goes bad.
This problem can be fixed through more education. Going into college, the issue of the dangers of heavy alcohol consumption should be stressed. I don’t think that drinking should be treated like the elephant in the room. There should be ample amounts of literature available to the students about drinking. If a student is caught with alcohol, and is underage, then they should be sanctioned. I feel like they should have to go through some sort of probationary period, write about their mistake, and attend some sort of educational class. Groups could also lobby to the entertainment industry to stop glorifying binge drinking in movies. People are heavily shaped by what they see on tv, and attempting to put a stop to that propaganda would be a big step.
As a society, we have to accept the fact that college students will drink. In a perfect world, they will stay sober, and have a wholesome college experience. These days, that is a lot to ask of students. We can seek to education them more about the dangers of drinking heavily. If they are caught drinking, they should get more than just a slap on the hand. The consequences will predict the likelihood of whether or not the behavior will occur again. Therefore, the ramifications should be stern enough to deter students from heavy drinking. The end goal is not punishment, but it would all be done to keep students safer and healthier.
