Recently, I attended an Academic Fair where I was able to gather a lot of important information about the career that awaits me when I graduate in college specializing in advertising and public relations. The affair was rewarding because I met several friends and classmates with the same objective as I am in attending the event. It was fortunate to be exposed in this kind of event because it’s there where I saw the information covering the operations of top companies. I also found out what compensation and benefits these companies offer to qualified applicants. I had the chance to talk with two professors in college, and they oriented me regarding the following topics about my major course:
The kind of career fields available in this academic area – A student who majors in advertising and public relations can be qualified to work in communication-related fields. Some of the opportunities that await them include advertising and marketing jobs, media sales, layout and design, copywriting, Internet communications, special event planning, media relations, public relations, research, account management, media planning and brand management.
Requirements for acceptance - According to the two professors I met in the Fair, an applicant to any of the fields of opportunities in advertising and public relations must have earned appropriate hours of training involving theory and practice in the student’s major subject. He/she must have completed studies in any reputable academic school that offers courses in media planning, strategic communications, layout, copywriting, management, research, campaign development and graphics.
Other accomplishments to qualify for a job in this field - In order to qualify for any position in advertising and public relations, a candidate must have earned a 2.0 GPA. One thing good with this major course is that students are trained in actual with clients who present to them real-life problems that may be encountered at work. This actual experience provides the students with professional perspective on matters involving problem solving in big corporations. This curriculum is specifically designed to hone the student’s creativity, planning ability, strategy, and implementation of creative problem solving. The training I get from school is so worthwhile because it has a great emphasis on individual relationships between the faculty and students. This close interaction is vital to the creative development of students. Our adviser helps us tailor an academic plan which is suited to meet our interests and needs. Likewise, students become exposed to areas of small business operations, retail and nonprofit business and community organizations. In this chosen field, students are encouraged to enhance their academic experience with appropriate hours in internships.
How I intend to use the information I gathered to prepare for my graduation plan – I have thoroughly evaluated all the requirements needed to get a job in the field of my major subject, and I will do my best to attain them. I know that it’s not possible to achieve all these without the combined traits of perseverance, determination to succeed and positive thinking. Likewise, I intend to create an action plan that would boost my ability to accomplish my objectives in life after graduating from college. From now on, I will concentrate more on my studies, stay away from parties and vices, and do my homework regularly. I also intend to cut my internet hangouts, games and social networks in order to give more time for my studies. Those parties which I usually attend whether on weekends or regular days will be cut off, and if I want to join my friends for fun, I’ll do it only during weekends.
The Academic Fair is fruitful, and I appreciate what I have learned from attending it. The information provided unselfishly by the two professors added to my knowledge pertaining to actual work in the office as well as exposure to the business community.
