The world in which we live in today is considered a ‘science fiction’ especially by those people who have come a long way from way back in 1950s.There are a lot of experiences a person who lived eighty years ago has undergone in trying to adapt to the rapidly changing world. Today’s world is not compared to the world in 1950s says the old man, time traveler in this case. He describes that being old consists of activities that one has to accomplish in the journey of growing with the growing world. He further compares the life way back in 1950s with today’s life and he would rather go back to the old days due to the pressure on having to adapt with today’s world. There are a lot of things that he describes to have been invented or rather developed that makes it difficult for him to adapt to them and therefore making him wish to go back to the old times. He mentions technology to be the main cause of changes, which has contributed to social, political and economic change of today’s people as compared to the old times where technology was not there.
He compare today’s means of communication with the old, it has been a difficult task for him to adapt to today’s means of communication where people are used to mobile phones and computers. Back in his times, he was used to writing letters and sending them via mail address where it could take a long time before one gets a reply. In today’s world he finds that communication has been made easier, whereby one can just dial a number in their cell phones and get instant reply. Adapting to the use of cell phones has been difficult for him since he is not able to write a text in the phone device, he prefers the old times where he knew how to write a letter on a paper. The use of computer to facilitate communication is another technology that he finds difficult, he wonders how technology has brought people too near yet so far as in the use of Skype to communicate with people who are far from each other. Back in his old times, there was no such thing and therefore when people travelled far from their relatives, they had to lose being in touch until they came back.
Urbanization and the rapid growth of towns with technologically advanced social amenities is another fact that makes the time traveler remain asking questions. He finds himself in a big storey building with escalators and lifts, the rooms are also designed with fans and all sorts of technology assets. When he tries to compare the old town with the current one, it is difficult for him to adapt to such situations an example of using an escalator in this case. He explains that back in his old times, there were only countable towns and they were not modernized with storey buildings. They were simple and easy to use and understand. Infrastructural facilities like roads and electricity were not convenient and it could take time for one to travel to the nearby town due to absence of transport system and bad roads. The means of transport for today’s world is faster and accessible and therefore one can travel from one place to another without delay due to absence of transport and bad roads. The use of train as means of transport is a technology that he explains has never changed. Train was there during his time and it still exists, despite the adoption of electric train, he finds it a technology that has not changed. Use of kerosene lamps is also another technology that has never changed since when there is power blackout, the only remedy is using lamps, and he therefore finds that it will not change.
If I woke up one day and find myself in 1950s, I would be affected since I would find it difficult to switch from today’s world to old times, just like the old man from 1950s find it difficult to adapt to today’s world. Finding myself in place where there is no electricity for example, would be very difficult since it would mean my cell phone will be off, and my computer as well, this means there is no communication and entertainment. This will mean I will have to adapt to have to write letters and wait for long time before I get back a reply. Finding myself in old town where there are no banks means I will stay without money since I cannot withdraw or I stay with my money in the house which will be more insecure. The method of studying would also be difficult since I have to adjust to the manual way of doing assignments for example doing calculations without the use of calculator.
In conclusion it is obvious that the old man has to pass through difficulties in trying to adapt to modern way of living. He explains that there is no otherwise but to accept the changes since there is no way one can go back to their old life, as per the saying ‘you only live once’. He is mesmerized by the changes he has to go through but he describes these changes to be helpful because it makes life simpler. He however despises the social changes that come with modernity and that are where he prefers the old social life compared to the modern.
