I am applying to the Master’s Program concerning Modern East Asian Study at the University of Toronto for a variety of reasons. To begin with, I am currently a fourth year student at the University of Toronto, and do not wish to change academic venues now. I have had adequate opportunity to research the faculty available for this program on campus, and have found them, as is typically the case, above satisfactory for what would satisfy my educational needs. Moreover, the University of Toronto’s location is suitable to me. In order to achieve the highest success, I would like to stay where I am at home. The school, the campus, and the community are my home. The institution has already given me so much, and I would like to give back whatever I can.
Concerning my current primary fields of study, I currently have a Bachelor’s of the Arts and Science, and am a Political Science Specialist. Both of these studies enthrall me. The intricacies of political science and politics in general, are fascinating to me. The study of art and science has also always been interesting. While I have now gained a general understanding of both subjects, I have decided it is time to place a specification on them, thus demanding I place a specification on location. East Asia began to become interesting to me as I worked my way through school, and began to understand the intricacies of art and politics on a global scale.
Through the spring and summer months of 2014 and 2015, I worked as an Advertising Intern, as well as a PR and Marketing Intern for TOD’s Shanghai. In January of 2016, I was afforded the opportunity of working as a salesperson at Sports World in Shanghai, and a server at Super Noodles Express in Toronto during the same month. Throughout these experiences, I attended school the rest of the year. I became fluent in both English and Mandarin. One of my most job skills is the ability to translate documents from English to Mandarin, as well as from Mandarin to English. As I began understanding the differences between the cultures, as well as the intricacies that divide them politically, economically, and artistically, I began understanding I wanted to make a study of modern East Asia a part of my academics.
Not only did I realize I wanted to make it a part of my academics, I wanted to make it the most important part. Maintaining a general understanding of the arts, science, and political science will always be important and something I strive to sustain. However, to understand East Asia and its relation to the rest of the world better, I seek a place in the MA East Asian Study program. I know it will give me valuable information I need to not only understand the differences I see and experience as I travel back and force, but also information I need to combat these differences.
I have a solid foundation in necessary backgrounds to make an education in the Master’s program work for me. A firm grounding in arts and science, as well as politics, and firsthand experience in travel and living internationally will allow me to understand and conceptualize the course material in ways that stand out from that of other students. While I am sure my peers will also go on to do great things with their separate intellect, I will have a different grasp of the information, allowing me to do different, perhaps greater things.
