Essay Question #1
Success in any pursuit requires two important components that rely on each other. These components include a person’s motivation for achieving a goal and the theoretical knowledge for refining the practice of doing something that a person believes strongly in. My motivation for choosing the Masters of Science in Management (MIM) comes from an interest in business, economics and finance that has been passed from one generation to the next. These interests have grown with me since childhood. I am from a close Chinese family that believes in sustaining good relationships with friends and family. Entrepreneurship and business are often blended into these relationships so one is aware of the importance of maintaining integrity while being determined and hard working at the same time. I want to honor the Chinese way of doing business but I am very motivated to learn how the varied interests reflected in my resume can be enhanced by a solid foundation of western theory and practical knowledge that can sustain my passion.
I am very interested in the course on ethics offered by the MIM because I believe strongly in sustainable business practices that can help businesses survive the global economy. The MIM program can support these ideas and offer leadership, core principles and practice that can improve my chances of success and lead to further intellectual curiosity. The final consulting project is added motivation because it gives me an opportunity to be able to put all my education, knowledge and skills to the test.
Essay Question #2
Share your expectations of the MiM program. (250 words or less)
I come into the MIM program with an open mind and the determination to succeed but try to avoid having any preconceived notions about what will be wonderful or challenging during the program. I expect to be interested in project management, negotiation and economics. I hope that other courses will also inform my world view. I expect that time management will be an important part of the course due to my own busy schedule. I hope to meet students with similar interests and to network with professionals already working in the field. I look forward to the consulting project and using all the education, skills and knowledge that I have acquired throughout my working life to achieve a great result for the project. I believe that the course offers me a valuable opportunity to learn other skills that are often overlooked in the syllabus such as the interpersonal skills of teamwork and diplomacy. Organizational skills like time management will be learnt during the course so that students know how to balance personal and professional commitments. I also expect to improve communication skills like listening, writing and oral skills. Other skills like networking, administrative and research skills can also be acquired. I have applied to this program because some of my close friends have recommended the school to me and I hope that their positive advice about the school is true. I hope that I can achieve high results that reflect my personal style and integrity.
Essay Question #3
The W. P. Carey School of Business values Excellence, Impact, Integrity and Community. Describe how you plan to uphold these values and be an active member of the graduate business community both inside and outside of the classroom. (250 words or less)
I believe that ethics and sustainable business practices are essential to maintaining company and personal integrity. Business have been given a bad name by not understanding that solid relationships are at the core of any successful business. People that trust in each other are bound by reciprocity that can sustain difficult financial times. I also want to balance my professional and personal integrity while making an impact both inside and outside graduate school. I believe this requires a knowledge of how to balance ethical dilemmas with the economic realities of business. Globalization has resulted in better living conditions for many people throughout the world but there are also those less fortunate that have been left behind. No amount of wealth can protect a person from the economic realities of the global economy. Ethical business relationships that can sustain not only a profitable business but one that is struggling is the key to success in my opinion. This is where relationships between employers, employees and their families’ come into play. Strong relationships result in stronger communities, reciprocity and well supported businesses. A business can only make profit if employees and the community believe in the product or service. I aim to join extracurricular activities at university and to network with other professionals and businesses with these ideas in mind. I also would like to join the local chamber of commerce and participate in the Special Event Planners Association and Business Communication Student Association at the university.
Essay Question #4 (Optional)Please provide any additional information you would like to bring to the attention of the Admissions Committee. (Optional question; 250 words or less)
An acceptance to the MIM program would be the culmination of a lifelong journey committed to following my own interests in the media, economics, business and finance. I am also interested in blending Chinese in addition to Western practice and theories. I would like to obtain as much experience as possible in the U.S and return to China for the purpose of starting my own business that works closely with U.S business interests and networks. This gives me the opportunity to support people in both countries and build a better relationship between the two. I believe that my education and strong relationship skills combined with my varying interests provide me with a solid basis for learning more about business during the program. I hope to be a successful ambassador for the faculty both inside and outside graduate school by joining extracurricular activities or the local business community. I believe strongly in education that understands the real world application of theory and the MIM was the only program that offered a strong practical element in the area I am looking for. I am very excited about the prospect of studying at the J.P Carey School of Business and believe that the Admissions Committee will understand the benefits of a stronger relationship between China and the U.S. but also see the benefit of a student that is dedicated to discovering more about western education and business. I hope that the Committee will see it in their best interests to accept my application.
