The foreword of Andrea Palladio’s first book on architecture revealed that he had always been an avid student of architecture. Further, much of his architectural ideas can be attributed to his fascination of the ancient Roman arts. As an avid architecture learner, he travelled to different parts of Italy and around the world as a means to gain a better understanding of buildings. He had made comparisons of the works of famous artists in the past and during his time, and this allowed him to come up with a striking perspective of architecture.
As a result of his study, Palladio found the need to thoroughly consider every element of the building even before starting to work on it. He based this on one of the ancient roman architect’s arguments that planning a building requires consideration of factors such as usefulness or convenience, durability and beauty. The house must be built considering the suitability of its use, and Palladio argued that failing to consider the suitability may lead to criticisms.
In his book, Palladio further pointed out about the different design concepts in the city. He pointed out how he was able to discern the outcome of a building by looking at the initial works completed so far. He described several buildings owned by prominent families in some of the key cities, and one can see how these observations had helped him developed most of his unique architectural ideas. His book contained several illustrations of architectural designs he found in visiting key cities. For example, he described the house of a count in Vicenza, and this depicted how he got some of his spectacular designs. Andrea Palladio became one of the most architect of his time because of his enthusiastic attitude towards learning about architecture.
