Question a
In order to be a D.O, there are some qualities that an individual needs to possess, and I believe that I have these qualities. From the onset, it is clear that a D.O gives quite a comprehensive care plan that looks at the entire body, rather than treating specific symptoms. This calls for an individual who is through, has a broad based experience in many issues and has the ability to see beyond the obvious. I have these abilities and capacities, given that I have worked in various fields, different positions and handling various responsibilities. As such, I have gained the skills and knowledge needed to offer an all rounded service, rather than being skewed to one side.
In order to offer wholesome services, there is the need for the care giver to be in a position to understand the patient’s condition. This calls for having an empathetic heart. This does not imply that the physician makes it known that he has pity on the patient. Rather, the D.O makes it known that the patient’s condition and situation is understood, and that it can be solved. I believe I have this quality as well, since I did much of counseling and comforting patients when I was working as a corpsman.
Offering such a service also calls for an individual who is prepared to dedicate time, energy and resources into the recovery process of the patient. This calls for quite a great deal of patience in handling different types of people. I feel that I can effectively handle this responsibility since I have a long history of associating with people from diverse backgrounds. As such, I have developed enough patience so as to deal with different people and handle different situations. Due to these qualities and skills that I have, I believe I can effectively play the role of a D.O.
Question b
More often than not, we are motivated by something to go for a given venture. I have had experiences in life which made me want to go for the D.O. qualification. The most notable experience was when I was working as a volunteer fire fighter, a time in which I came to appreciate the fact that the line between life and death is very thin. We had received a call that an elderly woman had suffered a heart attack. Of course, we took our gear and hurried to the spot, only to realize that we could not resuscitate the patient since she had been prohibited from going through such a medical procedure. Due to my empathy, I relay felt for the family of the elderly woman, but I learnt one thing; though we could not save her, our presence was quiet a good comfort to the family and we helped them deal with their loss.
This really motivated me to become a D.O. that way, I could be of great assistance to the people in many different ways, rather than being specialized and limited in one way. Another factor that motivated me is the fact that there are a lot of people in the developing countries who suffer without any help forthcoming. There are many humanitarian organizations that seek to help these individuals. As I tried to figure out how I can also participate in reviving hope in these people, I discovered that I could offer my services. However, in order to be effective in so doing, I have to have special training. That is why I need the D.O qualification. There are quite a lot of things I want to accomplish in life so as to feel fulfilled, but this can only be if I have this qualification. I, therefore, hope for a positive consideration.
