Ever since 1776, our founding fathers have been eager to warn us about the power the United States government has over the country. Individuals like Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson warned us about tyranny over the mind of man. They wrote the constitution to put fear into the American people about central and mass government. They gave states all the power during the early years of the United States, and as time as passed on, the Federal government now holds most power as of 2014. It’s ironic to, because the same fears our founding fathers had, are still present in modern America.
For example, the right of privacy is a huge debate in modern day America, and it was also something that our founding fathers cherished, and feared that government could take from them. So they implemented the 4th amendment to the Bill of Rights. Today’s is government is to be fear, because Western Civilization has evolved into something of a paradox. The United States, has gone through its fair share of history to get to where it is as a world power in 2014. A lot of world changing events have happened such as the NDAA, Iraq, 9/11, the introduction of home computing, and the invention of cell phones. Yet all of these events, and landmarks only help us to destroy our liberties even more.
For instance, the introduction of the cell phone has infringed on everyone’s right to search and seizure. When you download the most recent Facebook application on your cell phone, you are agreeing to let the US government, or NSA monitor your cell activity. Our founding fathers may have not known what a cellphone is, but they did understand how the right could be infringed upon. Or how about the introduction of the home computing? Once the 1990’s come around, it become a cultural norm for Americans to have at least one desktop-computer in the house hold. Well every time you use the internet on your computer, whatever you search, watch, view, or download is tracked, recorded, and stored away in a private online database. Companies like Google, and Yahoo own such technology. These companies, as well as your internet provider, have the ability to view this information at any time. This again, is an example of the fear our founding fathers had.
Another prime example of the fears instilled into the constitution is the right to due process, the right to see a court room. Sadly, this is a fear that is no longer being recognized by the majority of US people. You see there is a piece of legislation called the “NDAA” that completely eliminates our right to due process, and it was passed very recently to. The NDAA is a government document that is setup for renewal by the president every year, but was initially signed by Barack Obama on December 5th, 2011. In short-summary, the NDAA is a 1000 page packet of legal doctrine that opens the door for trial-free, indefinite detention of anyone, including American citizens, so long as the government calls them terrorists. If Obama does one thing for the remainder of his presidency –besides taking his family on vacations- let it be a veto of the National Defense Authorization Act (Kain 1)
It truly saddens me that the forewarnings that our founding fathers sought to give us, are hardily being recognized by the masses. I would say that almost every fear put into the constitution is still relevant in the United States today. However, they are NOT being recognized, nor taken seriously like they should be. As the brilliant Aldous Huxley once said; “There will be in the next generation or so a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak, producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them but will rather enjoy it.” I am afraid that all the fears our founding fathers sought to show us, are being ignored, and Aldous Huxley’s prediction is, and will become true. And if it does become true, we as a people, are subject to a rude awakening. Recent Events like flight 370, the War on Drugs have had a devastating effect on the United States. Through media presentation, our government demonstrates these events on national TV and puts fear into the American people, in which we as a people vote to give up our liberties for the “security” the government offers. Which, again, is ANOTHER fear Ben Franklin warned us about. In 1775, he can be quoted saying; “Those willing to give liberty for the sake of security deserve neither.” The bottom line is If you don’t care about the serious issues at hand, the fears our founding fathers warned us of, than you simply won’t be part of the solution. You’ll be part of the problem and play the full role of the victim. The United States government is directly taking away the rights that founded this country and is tearing down the bill of rights in front of our faces.
