Introduction
For those new to Google, it is one of the most popular search engines that enable the users to locate other sites on the web depending on the keyword searches. In addition, Google also enables specialized searches via videos, catalogs, news items, blogs and many others. Moreover, Google provides services through the internet that enable the users to create blogs, web pages publication, and send email. It also has tools for social networking, mobile devices, chat, organization, and also branded merchandise. However, based on Carr’s article “Is Google Making Us Stupid”, some of his views are correct while others are wrong, and the arguments are given below.
On the other hand, I would argue why some Carr’s view are wrong because he seems to be biased on the negative sides of the web without examining both the positive and the negative. To begin, I do not support Carr’s view that communication systems has not played a many roles in human life as well as influencing people’s thinking as compared to the internet. When speaking about technology, communication systems just like the internet are included. Without communication systems in place, some technological devices used for communication such as mobile phones and computers could not function the way it is today. Therefore, communication systems have greatly contributed towards the advancement of technology that Carr is discussing to be affecting the way people think and read. In addition, I would disagree with Carr’s perception that Google together with other companies intend to gain by acquiring peoples information based on more pages and links that they view in the internet in order to channel them advertisements. For instance, whenever personal information is collected, there is always an assurance of confidentiality as stipulated in the company’s private policy.
This means that the gathered information about people is mainly used for user’s benefits, but not for selfish purpose of the company. Moreover, Carr is wrong by saying that Google Company and others intend to encourage slow thought or leisure reading out of their economic interest of destructing people. This is a very wrong and biased belief because Google has been very useful research tool for very many people around the world. The reason is that Google is a very important tool in searching scholarly, peer-reviewed, or academic journals, books and many other electronic sources, and hence helps in the expansion of knowledge and understanding of the user and not destruction. Despite the fact that there are both the advantages and disadvantages of everything, the advantages that Google has on the human life exceeds its disadvantage. Nevertheless, despite the fact that technology is not easily adaptable, especially when it is introduced in for the first time, the productivity it brings to a company in higher as compared to the old production system. Therefore, despite the resistance that might face its introduction in an organization, the benefits ripped from these technologies is more in the long run.
