Good Arming School Teachers Does Not Guarantee Childrens Safety In Schools Essay Example

In the wake of the series of massacre that has occurred mostly in schools, killing and wounding innocent children, legislators and other organizations are pushing for laws that will allow teachers to carry concealed weapons in schools. However, teachers, school administrators, parents and other concerned citizens believe that teachers carrying guns in schools will only result to further violence, both accidental and deliberate.
A joint report presented by the Departments of Education and Justice showed that, in each school year since 1992 to 2006, at least 50 times as many murders of children ages 5-18 occurred away from school and at least 140 times as many youth suicides were committed outside the school property. These data show that gun violence is not usual in school, making the legislation which calls for the arming of school teachers unnecessary.
The National Rifle Association, a known supporter of the said legislation, believes “that it is only a good guy with a gun that can stop a bad guy with a gun.” However, the Law Center to Prevent Gun Laws, a non-profit organization aimed at supporting and promoting laws that will help reduce life loss due to gun violence, argues that since the school tragedies involved guns, it is through minimizing the number of guns in the society that will help prevent those incidences from happening again. The Center states that America has the highest number of gun owners in the world, followed only by Switzerland and Finland. Having more guns alone, despite the strict gun laws being implemented, poses numerous hazards to the members of the society.
The California Teachers Association, one of the biggest teachers association in the country, believes that efforts should be focused on making sure that the environment around schools are drug free and are free from guns and other deadly weapons that will put the students in danger. Increase on police visibility should be requested, and people should be more vigilant and responsible. It is only through the concerted effort of every member of the society to keep everyone, especially the children, safe will gun violence cease to exist.
