Immigration
3. The United States of America is a country that was built and developed by immigrants from
achievable and possible if a person worked hard. The American dream was followed by millions
of immigrants from Europe, South America, Asia and Africa. However, nowadays, the United
States is way much stricter in terms of immigration. Many politicians think that immigration has
more bad points of view for the American society instead of good points of view. In my opinion,
I think that immigration definitely has more positive consequences rather than negative
consequences for both immigrants and the American society. Immigrants tend to receive lower
wages compared to Americans because of the absence of official documents, poor language
skills, and other reasons. American employees tend to spend less money on wages if they employ
immigrants for low wage jobs. Secondly, no one knows if a poor immigrant who works as a
waiter on his/her part time job, will be successful in the future. As it was mentioned before, the
United States is the land of immigrants. Most of its prominent actors, actresses, singers,
businessmen and inventors were immigrants from other countries. Most of them did not have any
kind of education when they came to the United States. As a result, we can never judge an
immigrant person who came to America for a better life, for the opportunity of realization,
economic stability and political freedom. In terms of the pros of the immigration for the
immigrants themselves, there are quite a lot of them.
So, in terms of economic stability, immigrants benefit from it a lot. If we look about the history of immigration till today, we can see that most of the immigrants are coming from devastated economies with a corrupt government. By coming to the United States, immigrants benefit from the stability in terms of economy in the particular country, in this case, in the United States. In terms of political stability, the Untied States government is not corrupt and does not held the power within one person as a leader for more during than 10 years for sure. Therefore, there is no possibilities of attacks, riots and misunderstandings in terms of political stability that may cause political strengths. By new life = new opportunities, I believe that this is the perfect factor for immigrant. There are different kinds of immigrants in the United States. There are rich immigrants, such as business immigrants and wealthy households who immigrate because of better economic, social and political situation in the USA compared to China or India, for example. Both immigrants who have financial resources and who do not have any financial resources, are entering a new life when immigrating to another country. Where there is a new life, there are obviously more opportunities in finding out yourself, finding out new things, trying new ways of doing things and exploring new country, new laws, new social norms and so many other things. The extremely important pro of immigrants who were able to immigrate to the US or other developed nations either many years ago from their home countries, such as Libya, Syria or Lebanon, which top hot spots were known for devastating wars and worsening economic conditions. The ability to immigrate gave them the chance to survive and the chance to develop themselves and to be able to give the bright future for their children. For example, famous wife of the American actor George Clooney is world known lawyer Amal Alamuddin whose family immigrated from Lebanon to the United Kingdom. Her family is an example of immigrants with financial resources who benefitted themselves and the society of that country to where they moved, the United Kingdom. Alamuddin family benefitted for themselves, because they moved to the stable country where the war riots did not follow them anymore, they moved and were able to continue raising their family in a safe environment where their daughter was able to be raised safely and was able to get an international education. Most immigrants do not have any hope in their home countries, especially those immigrants who are coming to the United States and Canada from Venezuela and Mexico. Upon arriving into a new country, people start to live, to believe in something best, to try their best abilities, to work as has and as much as they can, as well as to dream in something better that they can achieve in their life. The other very important benefit for immigrants who are moving to developed nations like the United States is the bright future for their children. The future, where the person is valued based on his skills, the future free of wars and possible riots, the future without killings and shootings and the future in the developed country where the government cares about its people.
4. It is quite a controversial topic and discussion, however, despite all the benefits that immigrants have in the US, and the benefits that the US has from the immigrants, I believe that negative public opinion towards immigrants is justified at some points, but at some points it is not justified. Nowadays, the world top news are full with immigration topic, especially from Europe. This factor could not leave American behind and based on the world’s top problem which is illegal immigration, the negative public opinion only justified. Also, the negative public opinion is connected to that issue that illegal immigration is out of control, especially on the borders between the United States and Mexico. There are different types of immigrants, those who are willing to work and those who are not willing to work, but are just hoping on the amount of money they would get from the government. The second type of immigrants are obviously negatively viewed by the society and therefore, in my opinion, the negative public opinion towards them is justified.
It does make sense that certain segments of the American population are more anti-immigrant than others. I believe that more financially vulnerable American population such as Middle class are a bit more ant-immigrant than others, since their taxes they are paying for the government are somewhat spending by the government for the financial help of immigrants. In addition, between those who support Mr.Obama, there are less anti-immigrant people compared to those who support the other political party in the United States. The other important reason is that some Americans think that immigrants are taking away their full time jobs. However I personally do not agree with that fact. Most immigrants in the United States, especially those, who are from Mexico, take low paid jobs that do not require any specialization, professional skills, knowledge and experience. For example, most of them work as cashiers, cleaners or serve as helpers on the farms of the American households. Immigrants’ salaries are usually low, but they are satisfied with it, as long as they have money to feed their families and to send money back to Mexico for those relatives who live there. The question for those Americans who think that Mexican immigrants are taking away their jobs in this state of economy where the job unemployment is rising every day, is, if uneducated Mexicans who do not even speak the proper level of English language is able to take your (American-native person’s ) job away, then what are you really worth for? I believe that the negative public opinion towards immigrants that is based on the perception that immigrants are taking away American jobs is not justified at all. It all is about prejudice without any sense. American nationalists form the other unjustified negative public opinion towards immigrants in the United States. Nationalists, who think that their country should be closed for immigration and ban the entrance of new immigrants from around the world. These people, however, forgot that their country, the United States was itself formed by immigration, where immigrants from all continents developed the country’s wellness, society, history, victories and infrastructure. If it were not for immigrants and the melting pot, the United States would not be successful as it is now. In order to summarize the main points of justified and unjustified public opinion towards immigrants, the table below was created for the convenience of reading and concluding the main points.
Based on the table results, there are more points in justified public opinion towards immigrants, rather than in unjustified public opinion. As a result, in my opinion, based on the information submitted and discussed for this assignment, the justified public opinion towards immigrants especially in the 21st century wins over unjustified. More and more people start being afraid of immigrants and the consequences of their arrival that may affect the wellness of the Americans in terms of taxation, illegal migration other reasons.
