In class, we were given the opportunity to mingle with people with disability, I was able to relate with someone in the weaving department who was handicapped. Many people would argue why help people with handicap? Other people have started that effort before. But for me, I look at it more of a growing experience for me as an individual, to be able to see what is like outside the four corners of the classroom and the comforts of my home.
In Philosophy, Egoism puts one’s self as the motivation for action. Like in this activity, I participated to it because I feel that I will discover new things about myself and others through it. During the weaving process, I saw myself with great patience because it was a difficult to task to be honest. But I saw myself completing. Many may act for different reasons, but in this activity more than anyone I did it for myself because I wanted to find out the type of person I am.
I don’t think it is a selfish reason, but rather aids me in my self-exploration. The person I helped also showed me to never feel bad about one’s self despite any circumstances because I need to think of the things I still have rather than the things I do not have. I realized that putting one’s self in the center of my actions helped me to become more responsible for my actions because the one who will be greatly affected in the end will be me. The effort volunteering work is nothing compared to the new insights I gained during that day.
