The article describes a very unfortunate incident that happened with Army Sgt. 1st Class Max Voelz. Mr. Voelz and her wife Kim Voelz both served in the U.S military’s bomb squad division and were performing their duties in Iraq. As their duty to dispose of bombs is inherently dangerous, the most undesired incident happened with Ms. Kim Voelz. While performing her duties, she became a victim of a bomb blast that she was trying to dispose off. The incident proved fatal, and she died on the spot. This has completely changed Mr. Voelz life as he is now in a highly tense and depressed situation, and he has to emerge from the death of his wife to lead a normal life.
The major adjustment issue related to Mr. Voelz, is moving ahead with such a heartbreaking incident. There is no doubt in the fact that Kim Voelz and he were supposed to create a world of their own. Now there is no plan ahead for Mr. Voelz as he has lost the center of his universe. Furthermore, he is also engraved in the guilt that she died doing a task for which he sent her. All these things combine make it difficult for Mr. Voelz to move to a normal life. In the case of Mary Degue' although she has started to lead a normal life, she still is the center of attraction for undesired reasons. She may like to move ahead, but people’s reaction towards her disability is a serious concern for her.
Seeking Social Support: The strategy focused by Mr Voelz was to increase his social support by gaining support from people who have faced the same situation such as Mary who provided her the reason to move own by providing her own example.
Engaging In enjoyable activities: Mary tends to focus more on doing stuff that may help her to overcome her stress and disabilities. She takes the help of humor to surpass her emotions
Empowerment: Mary has used the empowerment as a stress coping strategy to provide solutions to her own problems and others. She provides help and support to other victims such a Mr. Voelz , and not only shares positive attitude to other but she also gains reasonable support for herself. (Green, M. L)
Active behavioral strategies: This kind of strategy requires taking actions to improve the situation. Such a strategy is also suggested for Mr. Voelz . He has engaged to Lesley Holt, this is a step forward and an action to improve the situation and start a new life. The strategy is suggested because in order to start a new life Mr. Voelz needs a partner that could help him to provide support and overcome his previous grievances. Active behavioral strategies are most required in the case.
Behind A Soldier's Suicidal Thoughts, An Unknown Brain Injury
Sgt Ryan Sharp serving in U.S military’s 3rd infant division had a traumatic brain injury during his service in the Iraq. The incident caused Sgt Ryan to have depressed thoughts, and he tried to commit suicide a number of times. None of his family members were aware of the situation, and they were unable to find out what actually is the reason of his depressions and suicidal attempts. It was not later than, when he met one of his team member who was deployed with him in Iraq, he come to realize that he has passed through a life threatening incident. After going through a checkup, he was diagnosed with a brain injury.
Major adjustment issues related to Sgt Ryan are living with a traumatic brain injury, which he cannot change. Sgt Ryan always believed that the depressible thoughts he is having could be changed with taking healthier initiatives. But now as he has realized that he cannot help with his depression feelings as these were not due the some mind effect but actually due to a brain injury. Now Sgt Ryan has to carry on with an injury, and there is little he can do to change his emotional state of mind by taking initiative regarding mind healing. (Singh, Yogesh, and Ratna Sharma)
Seek Social Support: Ryan sharp obtained support of his family when he sat back with his father and discussed the issue with him. This provided him support from his family to fight with the situation.
Proactive Coping strategies: Recognizing stressor: Sgt Ryan has recognized the root of the problem at the same time he has accepted the fact that there is less he can do to change the situation he has accepted the disability and is not trying to move ahead with it.
Engage in preliminary coping effect: Ryan is trying to learn how to cope with the difficulties that has arisen due the injury.
The most preferred strategy to cope with this situation is employing, increasing self-control strategies. Strong sense of self-efficacy and forging immediate satisfaction are the perquisites of the strategy. (No authorship indicated). These kinds of strategies tend to be proactive in recognizing the problem and seeking its solution such as thinking forward towards a brain surgery to provide a solution for the fatal injury. Furthermore, the strategy also requires obtaining professional guidance to achieve a balance with the daily routine life and stress management. These two reasons make it the most preferred strategy to cope with the situation. (Smith, KJ et al.)
