"Moving Beyond AYP: High School Performance Indicators" by Lyndsay M. Pinkys examines the effectiveness of AYP and reveals how performance indicators need to be established to determine a school's effectiveness. Adequate Yearly Progress is a measurement defined by the United States federal “No Child Left Behind Act” that allows the Department of Education to determine how every public school and school district in the country is performing academically. It is based on the improvement in the tests results and minimal increase in total graduation rates, but it does not show the students’ readiness for the college and future career. In order to fulfill needs of students to graduate ready for further education and to help educators to plan and implement strategies for assisting them, performance indicators should be introduced. These factors include attendance, course success, credit accumulation, tests for postsecondary education and career readiness, coursework, postsecondary participation and success, school climate.
In my opinion, all these factors are connected and give the clear picture of the students’ knowledge, activeness, desire to study, and the more successful the student is the better is the educational establishment. If student attends classes, he gets some information, remembers it and can reproduce in the future. If he knows the required information he is most likely to pass all the tests, finish the course successfully and will graduate from the high school. However, this chain highly depends on the environment in which one studies and it influences the ability and willingness to engage, perform and succeed. What is more, the successful graduation cannot fully prepare the learner for the profession, and he has to attend career-ready courses that will broaden his knowledge on the discipline that he will be dealing with in the future.
