Ambeer Lee (2015) wrote an article entitled Things In Sports Social Media Ruined, which highlighted on a number of negative impacts of social media to sports. What is good about the article is that it did not underestimate the magnitude of dependence today’s society has on social media but opening the article with the statement that the rise of social media has embedded itself in both culture, life and even sports. The article focused on the point that social media is synonymous to a double-edged sword and from the beginning it was clear that the article would focus on the negative impacts of the social media. One of the most outstanding negative impacts impact describe in the article is lack of quality control in social media posts. It is true that because of social media information, news and updates get communicated faster and easier but the down side is that the information does not stop flowing and there is no one monitoring the contents and therefore will eventually lead to misinformation and confusion. This statement is clearly observed with the quality of the posts available in social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
The article also made a bold statement about sports paying the price of the posts made in social media. Sports may lose their credibility due to misinformation promulgated in social media. Some of the fans and spectators do not even bother filter the words they say and bash players and teams. Unconsciously, social media is creating a rift between people and the real meaning of sports. The article was able to demonstrate key points by using historical comparison of how sports were done in the past and what has drastically changed today. When people read the article they will immediately realize what the author is highlighting.
