In this article, we assert that the main problem faced by sports teams is achieving proper team coordination so that when players are in the field they play effectively. Our view is that effective communication is the best tool that team players can apply to ensure proper coordination. In the article, we provide techniques that should be put in place during both practice and competition to achieve coordination among players.
We define team coordination as the way the actions of team members are arranged when they are put together to ensure the most effective results. The actions of players in a team must be well organized so that they are in line with the three main dimensions of action which are timing, type and location. We argue that when the players are in a position to arrive at a shared knowledge status, they are likely to draw on same knowledge and understanding during the performance, giving rise to effective team coordination. A clear comprehension of the players' dimensions can provide guidance on how team members and coaches attempt to ensure coordination in the team and also how they handle problems associated with team coordination i.e., coordination breakdowns. We also argue that games and practice programs offer great opportunities for players to acquire and develop some shared knowledge about situational probabilities which are closely related to their teammates and the team at large. Understanding the teammates’ responses can greatly aid players in finding ways of adjusting to the timing, location and type of their actions to ensure proper coordination in the whole team.
We also encourage switching positions which entails players taking some time to occupy the positions normally occupied by their teammates with whom they must coordinate. Switching positions enables the players to be flexible and be in a position to coordinate effectively from any corner of the field. Communicating plans is another effective way that we recommend in achieving team coordination. This can be done using multiple sensory nodes i.e. using different senses which must be communicated to the players earlier. Use of redundant communication mechanisms and enduring representation are other ways of communication plans to team members. According to us, receiving the plans is another technique that can be used to ensure team coordination. Receiving plans can be enhanced through developing listening skills of the team members, encouraging questions from them and checking to ensure that the plans are received as intended.
In conclusion, we have discussed how coordinating a team is not an easy task and we have explained how the coordination can be properly achieved by outlining the techniques that can be applied to ensure that players perfect their performance by dealing with the challenges they face. We recommend that coaches, psychologists and other stakeholders that associate with teams adhere to these strategies and fully implement them because they are important in ensuring team coordination.
