DOCTRINE OF THE MEAN
The doctrine of the mean is a book that describes the teachings of Confucian in china. Confucian was taught by a philosopher known as Confucius. Confucianism describes the Chinese traditional culture and outlines the social, ethical and philosophical approach. Confucianism was developed from Analects, a book written after the death of Confucius. The content of Analects is attributed to Confucius grandson called Zisi which meant Kong Ji in Chinese. Confucian teachings taught about the rites, virtues and duty that a leader should have so as to be a good role model with good morals. The doctrine of the mean has its origin from china. Zhu xi adopted the doctrine of the mean in the Neo-Confucian movement and does more research on it to apply it in real life situation.
The book uses many symbols that help to describe and exemplify on how to perfect one’s life. The doctrine of the mean refers to a fulcrum that never shakes and has no deviations. It is also referred to as Chung yung. Chung means not bending in any way while yung means not changing. The main goal of the doctrine of the mean as described by James Legge is to maintain co-existence between directing thoughts to an equality state. The doctrine teaches that a ruler who uses the mean should be always following that path and never look back. It describes a person who is superior as one who takes caution; he is gentle and has no respect for his inferiors.
The superiors, conmen and women, are all characterized by doing natural activities and avoiding anything that goes beyond the natural will. I have noted that the book upholds certain values that include being honest, moderate, objective, sincere and straightforward. It is divided into Confucian Metaphysics, politics and Ethics.
I have known that Chinese education resulted from the use of the doctrine of the mean. Education was established in the 20th century. It was a requirement for any job qualification in the Chinese government to have an understanding of the classics in the doctrine of the mean. The book emphasizes on cementing a peaceful and strong bond in the society between parents, children, husband, wife and ruler and subject. It is evident from the doctrine of the mean that the classics greatly affect the education system. The old wise men have with this regard preferred the education system to the Confucian traditional thought.
