Organización Nacional de Trasplantes (ONT)
The founding of the ONT in 1989 was a great leap for mankind’s health system. Throughout the years, Spain exerted a lot of effort to encourage volunteers or donors to contribute for the welfare of other people, especially those who are extremely ill. This transplantation system offers creating organs from stem cells, artificial organs, ending body rejection, machines to keep organs alive, and printing 3D organs.
The Problem
The main problem about the system is its lack of innovation that is essential for an organized service distribution. For example, there are recipients on the waiting lists who are in doubt because ONT can’t give an exact date for the transplantation operation to take place. This is a problem with the flow and dissemination of information that it is hard to monitor a large number of recipients daily. One solution for this is the emerging health system called Electronic Medical Record (EMR) which keeps detailed information about each patient and all their health information including illnesses and the medical attention they need. EMR is an enhanced and virtual record keeper to keep medical centers organize in dealing with their patients, Skolnik (2011) also shared in his book that EMR would be a huge contribution to the entire health system of a country if installed and utilized properly.
The Purpose
The purpose of ONT is very simple, to provide transplant operation services to those who needs it and aren’t financially stable. Spain Health Ministry will fund everything and give it to the people for free. However, the problem lies there. The budget for this isn’t that plenty that’s why there are certain limitations and there are many recipients who are in line waiting.
The Project for Development
The country and several health organizations are working hand in hand to develop the entire system for better and faster services. The factor in need of development is the recipient’s waiting list because it has many problems. Some recipients would have to wait for a whole year or even longer due to shortage of organs being donated for transplantation. There is also an issue with practitioners who aren’t willing to provide free services for such a delicate and serious operation that originally cost thousands. These transplantation operations are also hard to perform and only experienced professionals can do it that is why there is a shortage of medical volunteers who are willing to do everything for free. The ONT is also in grave need of better resources since we are talking about functioning organs here. This is not like blood, wherein everyday hundreds of people are willing to donate. The ONT needs to gather much resources in order to give everyone on the waiting list what they need.
The Success
The success of this development would be another great leap for not only Spain but mankind. The ONT system should be recipient wise and resources wide. There is a big preparation needed and the process in between will cost probably millions with the organs, facilities, and new medical equipment’s. However, going back to the EMR, this system will also be of great help especially for a more flexible recipient’s list. The system can access all presented information and categorized everything. The system itself will notify the ONT who is next in line for transplantation and the assessment for that will be base on the needs of each patient and the available resources.
