In five years, I want to be running my own business. I do not know exactly what I would like to do yet, but I know that it has always been my goal to run my own business and control my own fate. In China, the economy is still very open to starting businesses. I know that it is sometimes very hard to do this, but I also know that after going through my course I will have the skills that are necessary to work on my own business venture (Ng). I know that owning one’s own business can be a struggle, so I also hope that I will find good workers who I can trust to help me work in whatever field I decide to go into when I begin to establish myself in the business world.
In order to reach my five-year goal, I need to set the following short-term goals. First, I must complete market research in a number of different areas. Because I have no specialty, I know that I will have to determine a market that is a good fit for my skills. I have begun to make lists of industries that interest me, in the hopes of finding one that fits with my skill set and has a niche that I feel that I can fill easily. I also want to take a job in New York City in the summer in one of the areas that interests me. I will do this in the hopes of learning more about the industry and so that I can begin to establish a better understanding of what I need to function appropriately in business niches like the food industry and so on.
I will know that I have reached these goals when I have a list of potential business ventures that is sorted by my level of interest and my level of knowledge about the business itself. I want to really ensure that I do not enter any kind of business without an excellent understanding of the business niche that I will be entering; I think starting a business is hard enough, and my schooling has taught me not to underestimate the difficulty of business administration. I know that things can and do go wrong in business all the time, and I want to be prepared for the worst when I establish myself in any business niche. What I really want to avoid is allowing myself to become locked into employment. Then I will be unable to chase my goals of becoming an independent business owner.
I am currently applying for positions in New York City. I want to go to New York in the summer to work, as I feel that this is a city that I would love to experience. I also know that it is a city full of entrepreneurs and people who are extremely good at business. If I am able to move to New York City, I will be able to see the way that the business world works from the inside out, rather than only learning about the business world in a classroom. This is very important to me, as I know that no matter how much I learn inside the classroom, it will never be the same as when I am actually in the workplace trying to implement the things that I learned. I am currently trying to get a better understanding of the business world. I am also hoping to save at least $10,000 so that I can use this money to begin to build my own business organization.
I will need a number of physical, financial, emotional and social resources to meet my end goal of opening my own business. First, I will need a storefront; to find a location, I will have to first decide on what business niche I will be a part of and where I would like to open this business. I will also need some savings, which is another reason why I am working in New York City this coming summer. With financial resources, building a business will be much less difficult. If I had to take out a loan to begin my work on my business, it would be a very different experience. Socially, I will need the support of my family and friends. Building a business is a very stressful endeavor, and I know that I will probably need the wisdom and support of the important people in my life to be able to successfully meet my goals.
My priorities for reaching my goals are establishing myself in the next five years. I know that there will be trade offs if I want to establish myself in such a short time frame. I am willing to wait to start a family for a few years so that I can be more financially stable first, and I am also willing to wait on some of the fun things I want to do—like traveling—until I am more able to leave my business in the hands of employees. I know that beginning a business requires sacrifice and struggle, and I am willing to put in the time and effort to do well in whatever industry I choose to enter.
