Does MGI meet the definition of a team? (Consider whether the members of MGI would agree on the group’s mission statement). Explain your answer in detail.
According to week 4 class notes, a Team is a set of interpersonal interactions structured to achieve established goals and consists of two or more individuals who are aware of their positive interdependence as they strive to achieve mutual goals, Interact while they do so, are aware of who is and is not a team member ,have specific roles or functions to perform and have a limited life span of membership. MGI meets the definition of a team since the members were all aware of their inputs to achieving the group’s mission statement though in different perceptions. Henry and Sasha were incorporated into the team to help in developing the business plan for the contest in the process of achieving the group’s mission for a long lasting music industry looking into the future. On the other hand Dav was incorporated into the group to help in the technical production of the group’s task in making it more marketable and longlasting.
According to week 2 lectures MGI are working in a group since MGI founders i.e Alexander Gimpelson, Igor Tkachenko and Raman Yakub could not survive the fall of the music company after the internet bubble outburst. The MGI employed students from the HBS and together with the founders they were sure of getting a conclusion that could help in meeting the group’s mission. A team is established through redefining the overall mission into specific team goals (which creates necessary positive interdependence), establishing individual and team accountability, build team commitment and conducting administrative tasks through frequent meetings where members promote each other’s success. Despite the various meetings held with no common mission agreed on, the MGI founders realized that they had not assigned individuals with specific tasks in helping them achieve the specific goal of marketing the music industry for a longer duration according to the founders wish. The MGI recruited staff who kept on seeking for further opportunities, which evidently explains how incoherent team building in the group was.
Evaluate the process of staffing this team based on what we have learned regarding the of interviewing and selection process.
The hiring process of staff in MGI did not have an interviewing and selection process, this is evident with Henry’s case where he meets with Igor who explained to him about the MGI foundation and its founders together with its intended mission without subjecting Henry through an interviewing process which includes; defining job requirements, recruiting promising candidates, interviewing, evaluating candidates and extending offer. Igor after talking to Henry expressed a liking for him and send Sasha to persuade Henry to join the group in order to help in the write up of the business plan contest that was forthcoming and the group was to participate. The candidates were not evaluated based on their performances since there was no offers extended. Personal characteristics and interpersonal skill in relation to the job tasks had not been advertised for competent individuals to apply for the post that could end up in the selection of the best person for the jobs that the founders of the MGI wanted to be incorporated in ensuring the use of softwares in the both as an innovative way and teaching children about music. Poor selection process of the staff therefore delayed the operational procedures of the MGI making the students to feel wasted and unappreciated in trying to work with complicated groups.
