The most common types of leadership styles are: autocratic leadership, charismatic leadership, bureaucratic leadership, democratic or participative leadership, Laissez-faire leadership, relations oriented leadership, and servant leadership. Chuck Gieg is a charismatic, democratic, servant leader, and a people oriented leader because he fits into the characteristics exhibited by this types of leaders. Charismatic leaders inject huge doses of enthusiasm into their team and they are usually energetic in driving others forward. Democratic leaders invites other team members to contribute in the decision making process. Laissez-faire leaders leave their team members to get on with their work as they monitor what is being achieved and communicates regularly with their team members. Servant leaders are those that are not often recognized, but they meet the needs of the team that they are leading. People oriented leaders are focused on organizing, developing and supporting the team members. Chuck Gieg has the traits that fit into the above described leadership styles.
In a changing environment, it is important to understand the types of leaders that are leading a certain group in order to determine and help evaluate whether this kinds of leaders are successful of not. Knowing a type of leader involves getting to know the actions of this people while they are in their leadership roles. Scott Wolf is a character who plays Chuck Gieg in White Squall movie. He has been involved in some leading roles whereby his actions can receive mixed judgments from the viewers. The problem of establishing the type a leader Chuck is arises when he decides to have sex with one of the lady student. He however has leadership skills that are helping his team of students move forward. A leader can exhibit more than one leadership styles as it is the case of Chuck.
Chuck Gieg can be described as being brave and efficient of the high school crew that is in the ship. At the beginning of the movie, Chuck is depicted as being independent and doing his own thing without following the path of his brother. This establishes Chuck as being rich in new ideas. To show that he is self-sustaining, Chuck does not put much dependence on the scholarships as he just wants to do his own things. Chuck is very much caring of his fellow students especially Gil who he would always try to comfort. From the movie, Chuck is a kind of a leader who never gives up on anybody and this makes Chuck a charismatic leader. For instance, when Gil was locked up in the ship and it was about to sink, Chuck risked drowning himself while trying to push and open the door in order to free Gil. Among many other types of roles played by Chuck in the movie, he goes to talk to Frank towards the end of the movie to tell him to always do what is right. Chuck is being a team leader who always tries to glue the crew and keep them together. This character of Chuck makes the study conclude that Chuck is a people oriented and a people servant leader. This is because Chuck initiates things and also keeps them going within his student crew.
For one to be a successful leader, he/she has to choose those leadership styles that can help them achieve the organizational targets. This helps the leader to fit into situations that require both roles. Chuck might not have been a good leader especially in a situation where he was involved in a sexual encounter, but he tried to fit into most of the above described leadership styles that include a laissez-faire leader, a democratic, a people servant and a people oriented leader.
