WRITING
Adjectives and adverbs are basically words that modify other words by adding details to such words so as to create a meaningful communication that the reader uses to picture the actual situation being conveyed. Adjectives describe nouns or pronouns while adverbs describe verbs, adjectives or adverbs. Adjectives are used to answer the questions; how many, how much, which and what. On the other hand, adverbs answer the questions; when, where and how. Both adverbs and adjectives are used in sentences to either provide useful information or simply create more detail about the sentence or make it more interesting (Grammarly Handbook, 2013).
Adverbs and adjectives are of different types. There are adverbs of manner, place, time and frequency. The different types of adjectives include; possessive, descriptive, numeral, demonstrative and interrogative adjectives (Khea, 2009).

The magazine cover selected for analysis is the TIME magazine titled: Africa Rising. The cover explains the issue being discussed by using various adjectives and adverbs. The subtitle Reads: It’s the World’s Next Economic Powerhouse. But Huge Challenges Lie Ahead. Here the adjectives are; huge and world’s. The adverbs are; next and ahead. The adjective huge is of descriptive nature and it describes how great the challenges facing Africa are. World’s is a possessive adjective which describes the relationship between Africa as a continent and the world in general. Next and ahead are adverbs of time used in this cover. Next here describes the period over which Africa is expected to rise in relation to other continents. Ahead on the other hand, describes the futuristic time period when Africa will have challenges against her advancement. Considering the audience of the magazine who are all people and governments to be affected by the progress of Africa, the adjectives and adverbs in this cover have been appropriately used to give the necessary information and make the magazine more interesting to read.
