Suh is a South Korean, born in 1962 in the city of Seoul. He attained a Bachelor and Master degree in Fine Arts from Seoul national university. He moved to the United States of America and joined the Rhode Island school of design in Yale University. Suh led a travelling life whereby he moved from his family in Korea to New York, where he worked. Suh’s “art work” portrays special and emotional effect of migration. This gives the brief background of Suh.
The presentation is in the form of video; it gives the details of the resemblance of a home. The presentation is a piece of art or sculpture. The chain of artistic works in the video depicts a continuation of various art works in different designs, together with the setting of our environment and how a person perceives the environment. The writer will analyze the video and the artistic sculptures in relation to what Do Ho Suh perceives as the meaning of a home.
The art works depict the feeling of displacement, when he is introduced to the United States from his country of residence for education at education Rhode Island school of design. This experience forces him to do everything possible to create a home in his new environment. Later, he comes up with a new idea of taking the measurements and imitates to make and transport similar spaces in different areas. With this Suh tries to bring out the meaning of “home” as freedom to what one loves. When he enters the new country, at first, he feels like a stranger but what gives him courage and company is when he starts doing what he loves.
Suh continues to show how he perceives a home by showing what he understands by a home. He makes a house inside another representing his topic of a home within a home. With this Suh portrays a home as a house, he has made different sculpts represent both his childhood home in Korea and one in Rhode Island.
However, it is not clear whether it is his Korean home which has grown inside the adopted one or the adopted has grown inside his Korean home. The walls have been cleared to show the space between the United States and Korean, and this has made it more open. The carving is divided into four parts that are semi-transparent, and each segment has an allowance for the audience to view through.
A home can be defined as a place where one feels comfortable and always long to be whenever he/she is away. One can find love and stability in the home. There are different types of homes, for instance, an apartment, mansion or even a cave. Some scholars have drawn a difference between a home and a house that is to say the house is any building constructed for people to stay, which does not necessarily make it home.
In conclusion, Do Ho Suh in his art describes a home in both aspects for instance, a feeling of a home especially by the people surrounding an individual. That’s why in his video he talks about the surrounding. In his art work, home is so much attached to decoration this evident in the sculptures themselves.
