Many games are played for fun. Sometimes game are played for more than that. They are played for bragging rights, to prove a point, to achieve personal best records, or beat another’s best record. Within these modern times, individuals who reside in industrialized countries play games for amusement, entertainment, or money. Rarely are games played as a matter of life or death. However, there are games that are played as matters of life or death. Depending on the prize, the winner chooses his or her spouse, where they will live, the car they will drive, the clothes they will wear, the education they will have, the amount of money they can make, etc.
While there are many games one can participate in for the prizes involved, there is another cost that must be considered. The hardest physical, mental, and emotional games may offer the most luxurious, coveted prizes. However, losing those games demands the greatest costs. The stakes are high and the pressure to win is even higher. The games range in required skill levels requiring physical, mental, and emotional/spiritual strength. One game that requires its participants’ unwavering focus and skill has extremely high stakes. The participant, man or woman, competes for top choice of spouse. One’s spouse can determine the remainder of the type of life available to them. One’s opportunity to compete in additional games for occupations, education, and other items depends on the choice of spouse. If the stakes were not already high enough, those who are in the bottom of the losing pool lose their lives. In this way, social Darwinism is satisfied as only the strongest in any given game survive. There is no ability to adapt after the games for those that are in the lowest bracket of losers. Instead, the games serve an additional, sinister purpose which is to identify and cleanse society of those who are predetermined by the games as not possessing the ability to contribute at a high level.
The Spouse Game. This game requires mental focus, physical quickness and stamina, as well as emotional stability. It is based on the participants’ mastery of communication. Competitors, men against men and women against women, must decipher the symbols on blocks. The symbols are adapted from ancient languages that have not been used for centuries and are not studied in schools. Literature on these languages is not available as their study would provide an unfair advantage in the game. Blocks are either arranged in an unruly fashion on a single pillar or scattered in a maze-like scheme. Players must commit to a strategy as soon as they find out which fashion the blocks are presented in. Sometimes competitors are timed on how long it takes them to decipher their results because it is assumed they will be able to physically collect all of their blocks. Other times, when different language blocks are assigned to every competitor, winners are chosen based largely on their ability to communicate with other competitors in order to get their language blocks from them. The abilities to barter, negotiate, persuade, and strategize are considered indispensable tools directly related to personal success. Those that possess them have access to participate in games for amazing career opportunities. Those that do not remain do not have access to participate in games associated with the top rungs of the socioeconomic totem pole. Those that do not score high enough are eliminated so their perceived inferior genes are not passed along to future generations.
With the language blocks designed in such a way so that participants have to exert physical strength and/or agility in order to retrieve them, the first step is to obtain all of the language blocks from the same language. Participants, having no knowledge of the particular language, will have to identify blocks of the same color, shape, or material. Unless specifically delineated, no participant can retrieve a language block that does not belong to him or her and keep it for the duration of the game. Competitors are only allowed to have a certain number of language blocks and that number is the same for everyone. That number is disclosed at the beginning of the game so participants must make sure to pay attention to the rules and make sure they obtain and maintain the correct number of language blocks. Competitors who do not abide by this risk being scored in the bottom rungs and that could lead to the loss of their life at the conclusion of the game and reveal of the scoring.
Participants who do not have enough language blocks and have identified the participant, who has their language block, must engage them in strategic negotiations in order to retrieve it. Having more or less of the required language blocks causes a corresponding decrease in that participant’s score.
The physical challenges to obtaining language blocks can also vary. Strength, coordination, and agility are crucial in these challenging physical exercises. These challenges are designed to promote healthy lifestyles that are anti-sedentary. Competitors do not have to be the best at any one physical challenge because that is only one aspect of the entire game. Additional components must be satisfied to achieve an overall high score. Individuals that excel physically may have an advantage in some challenges but do not, by far, end up obtaining the highest scores due to their physical ability alone.
Participants are always timed during the game as obtaining satisfactory results in a shorter amount of time weighs into the scoring rubric. However, time is not the only category competitors are rated. In addition to time, participants are also rated on other objective categories such as height, weight, body mass index, agility, strength, and flexibility. Subjective categories competitors are rated on include ability to comprise and commit to a game strategy, flexibility, negotiation and persuasion techniques, time management, and adaptability.
The judges for these games are much like the judges in industrialized nations. They comprise a number of checks and balances to the government. However, probably more so, these judges answer even less to government officials. Game judges make up the rules for the games and their sole duty to maintain the integrity of the games is to make sure all competitors follow the rules and are scored appropriately. This is done in order to make sure the participants with the perceived best qualities for the nation’s posterity are allowed to pass on their genes.
Consequences to losing these games are dire. Those that score poorly are not allowed to enter into games that can determine the quality of other areas of their lives. Their socioeconomic status is limited based on their performances in predetermined games. Sometimes those with certain handicaps must face the consequences of their physical and mental limitations by only being allowed to participate in particular games. Although this is the case, The Spouse Game is the most important as one’s spouse is a deciding factor in additional games one can participate in. As such, one’s creativity and ingenuity is tested in order to gauge and rate their worthiness to obtain who they consider to be an influential spouse. With all of the different categories they are rated on, love is not on the scoring rubric.
