in the Modern World
There is no denying the fact that humans faces with a lot of hard decisions every day in their life. Moreover, some of these issues are always highly important ones. For instance, the role of the government and laws in the person’s life and environment is one of the most crucial problem nowadays. In fact, people differ greatly towards this issue. Many of them consider that modern governmental rules cannot satisfy everything that citizens needs from them. Others believe that the relationship between person and government is much more complicated one. Therefore, in order understand this point clearly and to find the best solution for this issue let us look deeply into the Plato’s Crito and its main promise.
In fact, Crito is unique and very important Plato’s heritage to the modern generation. It includes the conversation between Socrates and Crito that was his good old friend and like-minded person. Meanwhile, Socrates was in jail and he was waiting for the death penalty. Recognizing this fact, Crito tried to coax the great philosopher to escape in order to save his life. Actually, Crito had a lot of persuasive points and all of them was very attractive for many people there. However, Socrates did not believe that escape is the right decision. His points were undeniable for his friend. Moreover, they included the most important things that every person should always remember.
The first persuasive Socrates’s point was about the people’s opinion and its role in the person’s life. The philosopher stated that people are fond of judging others and expression their thoughts about different situations. However, it does not mean that person have to listen to all of them. Actually, such behavior can create serious problems for this human in future. Therefore, Socrates’s implied that “we must not regard what the many say of us” due to the fact that this information will lead to the different serious mental and physical problems.
Moreover, Socrates claimed that people have to listen only to the truth and to the person who has enough knowledge and respect in order to have a possibility to talk about person’s problem. In fact, this statement is very crucial nowadays. In the age of the Internet, people share their achievements and doings with others, and receive a lot of feedbacks about these actions. Nevertheless, the main goal is to listen only to the respectful opponents that can provide valuable opinion about person’s behavior. Others will only interfere person’s attempts to succeed in life.
Despite the significant importance of the previous Socrates’s statement from the Crito, there is another interesting point that is even more persuasive. During this conversation, philosopher also raised the question about people’s reaction to the different negative actions in their life. Socrates’s insisted that person have to evaluate the problem and to act according to the law and human kindness. In other words, humans have to understand that severe, dishonest and unjust behavior cannot be greeted with the same from their side. The main reason is that such actions will lead to the more harmful situation and victims will became their offenders.
However, previous points from this dialog were only the platform to the main part of this paper that includes Socrates’s position about role of the government in the human’s life. In fact, he believed that it is the most important part of the every citizen’s life. Moreover, he also stated that “our country is more to be valued and higher and holier far than mother or father or any ancestor”, therefore, every citizen has to respect and follow the main rules and principles of the state in order to show the biggest respect, involvement, and gratitude to it. Moreover, Socrates was truly believed that the violation of these simple rules is the biggest and most harmful misconduct of every citizen in the particular country. Therefore, his escaping from the jail would be unforgivable act. Furthermore, Socrates implied that life of the regular person does not make sense after such behavior.
In addition, the great philosopher respected laws and he believed that they are core principals of the every state in the world due to the fact that they regulate all the social processes in them. Thus, the violation of any of them will lead to the destroying of the government and state. Moreover, Socrates admitted that citizens have to always feel that these laws are adamantine and they can always protect every person in the country. In case if innocent person comes to jail, people will have to explain this situation to the government in the just and polite manner.
Taking into account all of these points and based on the reasons that were analyzed above I have drawn a conclusion that Plato gave an opportunity to the rest of humanity to understand the main and the most crucial Socrates’s convictions. In addition, Crito emphasize the role of the government and laws in the people life. Moreover, it shows that both of them depends on every citizen in the state and all people in the world have to remember about it every time in their life.
