In the story Mechanics, the author, Luis J. Rodriguez uses an eloquent voice to show the neighborhood he had spent many years. Rodriguez uses most of his stories in the book to show the kind of life he lived as a father, resident, organizer and writer. The author uses the story Mechanic to show the neighborhood that gives more than its appearance allows. This essay discusses the value that women held in the protagonist’s life.
Mechanics presents a pessimistic/ optimistic outlook on love. The story involves a man, a protagonist, whose entire life concerns his children and wife. In his story, the author shows the power that a woman can have over a man’s life. The man’s life is all about the woman and children in it until he is left by his wife. The author shows how important the woman was in the man’s life by showing the confused state of the man after he is left by his wife. He does not know what do to. However, after some time, he thinks that his wife’s departure had sent him free. Analyzing this point critically, the protagonist does not actually feel freed by the departure of his wife. The protagonist uses this as an excuse to forget about his wife. However, it is hard for him to do this as he remembers how much he loved his children. The author later makes the man admit that he is hopeless, with no idea of what he should with his situation. With this, the author shows how important the woman was in the protagonist’s life. According to the story, the woman was like the man’s pillar, which made the man collapse after he was left.
"He was to give the bride away, though everyone guessed he was too drunk from hanging out at the cantinas on Chaves,” (Page 118)
In conclusion, we can say that the plotting of the story was set to show the significant of women in a man’s life. As the author develops the story, it is evident that the protagonist’s life revolved around his woman and children. Different incidents throughout the story show how important the protagonist valued women in his life. A good example was when he went drinking during his wedding. He was supposed to give the bride away, where many people doubted his ability because he was drunk. However, the author shows how women held power over the protagonist’s life as he was able to do the expected despite being drunk.
