The Franklin ship was a Canadian ship that was being commanded by Sir John Franklin. The ship was used for various expeditions by the British man. However, the ship was involved with an expedition in the arctic where due lots of ice it got trapped. The ship was on a quest to try and navigate the water passages in the northwest. The ship got stuck there, and they could not make it back home. Franklin together with the rest of the crew managed to reach land, but the cold conditions of the arctic were unbearable to them and so they succumbed to the harsh conditions (Gopnik, 2014).
The government of Canada through Prime Minister Harper decided to send a specialized crew who would try and find the ship and as a result of good public and government support in the form of money and technology the team sent managed to find the ship (What we're (not) talking about when we talk about Franklin, 2014). This search has been considered as the biggest in the history of Canada, reason being the fact that a lot emphasis of was given to this ship because of the things it was associated with as far as adventure, exploration and expeditions are concerned (News, 2014). The team sent equipped with top of the art equipment which finally paid off as the ship was found. However, some of the main issues associated with the ship that has made its recovery very important are the important passages in the northern parts that are very crucial and so the determination of sovereignty of these areas is very important for Canada (Rennie, 2014). The other factor is the use of the ship to bring harmony among the people of Canada and help fasten the public’s support for the government (Radio, 2014).
Because of the above factors the Franklin ship has been a very crucial and significant, this has been seen through the much media coverage associated with it. This essay is therefore very important because it will try and provide information about the ships and its association with the various media sources as well as how the media has influenced the way the world has perceived the ship.
The Franklin ship loss in the arctic has been very significant worldwide because of the expeditions it had especially in the exploration of the water ways in the north. It has even led to the inspiration of some motion picture films with the most notable being The Titanic. According to the various sources of information including the articles described above, description of the ship is deep with much information provided to mainly clear the air and reduce the much speculations about the ship (Gopnik, 2014). However, much of the information mainly focuses on aspects of economic development associated with the north-western water ways. These water ways are important as they can be good sources of revenue for the government. The ships recover would help establish sovereignty of these waterways for Canada and hence they would have control over them.
The media has been very significant in this quest as it has provided enough information to the public and as a result the government has gotten enough public support (What we're (not) talking about when we talk about Franklin, 2014). However, the media can be a source of biased information in the sense that they could emphasize more on particular aspects of the issue at hand and leave out others that are important. An example is coverage of the ships history and leaving behind the significance of recovering the ship (Radio, 2014). The different media coverage also has different characteristics that cause variation in the way the information reaches the public. For example, online sources are more informative and accessible. Video sources are more descriptive and more informative than audio sources involving the radio. The main developmental aspect associated with the ship is the anthropogenic factors associated with economic benefits of the waterways (News, 2014).
The passages would develop more effective routes for ships and also generate lots of revenues. From this information, it is clear that the media is a very significant aspect that is very important for the provision of information. In this case the media have been used to cover developmental issues associated with Sir Franklins lost ship (Rennie, 2014). It helped show the government’s interest over the ships and the extent it reached to uncover the mysteries associated with the ship. However, the media can be sometimes biased and hence can be very problematic. The media should also provide information based on all perspectives because unbiased information is wrong and might alter public perception in a negative way.
