Indians in Unexpected Places
Philip Deloria is the author of the book “Indians in unexpected Places. In this book, the author describes, the photograph of the mid-twentieth century through a woman who is dressed in a beaded buckskin dress. She is sitting under a hair dryer salon. The author has depicted the picture of non-Indians and their way of thinking towards Indianness and the modernity influenced by Americans and their reactions towards their indigenous people. Deloria also points out certain pictures of the Indian through their participation in the athletic events, buying of goods like automobiles, in Indian films, and the popularity of music. Deloria explained the themes in five essays and attracted a number of audiences, which may include Whites, American Indian studies because it is reflecting American history at Twentieth century.
The early two chapters of the book are highlighting the participation of Indians in the cultural artifacts, which are improving the image of Indians in the eyes of non-Indians. In the 19th century, there was the difference and a wall between Indians and non-Indians through violence. Now the image has changed through the participation of Indians and Indian actors build all these images. First, they showed their violent faces to Americans and on the other hand, they showed that they are good at participation in the modern world (p. 106).
The third chapter of the book is illustrating the cultural history and American Indian studies. This chapter has the best combination of personal stories, analysis of culture and the role of sports in the identities of Native Americans. The author also shows the connection of young generation and growth of sports in colleges. This chapter is the most interesting chapter in the book.
The fourth chapter shows the use of automobiles and shows their adoption of modern technologies. This chapter is also focusing on the cultural analysis and reader may think that Indians are used to of using new technologies like cars in their use. The last chapter is gives details about the music of Indian people likes by Whites and its popularity.
