In 200-250 words, discuss what research paper are, why they are written, and how they should be written. How does a research paper differ from a report? You may use any resources you would like. You will have to make sure you cite and reference each source.
The research paper is the one that is originally written by the writer that presents his ideas and concepts in response to the literature he reads and information he gains from library sources. As individual gathers information on the research paper topic, his information regarding it increases which allows the writer to make informed and original interpretation or judgment of the material he has read (Charles, p.1).
The research papers are written in order to help students improve their research skills and facilitate their writing and brainstorming skills. This not only provides knowledge of vast topics but also helps in writing non-plagiarized papers. In order to write a research paper, it is important that a proper scholarly research should have been completed through library sources and online journals on a well-defined topic or issue. The writing style should be defined such as APA, MLA, Chicago, etc. to define the paper format and in-text citations. An outline of the research paper should be designed and if required should be pre-approved from the professor. This outline will help to write a research paper taking in consideration the word limit. It is important that a non-plagiarized paper should be written (Charles, p.1).
The research paper and research reports are two different ways of writing paper. The research report is a paper that is written based on the research that is already conducted by other authors. This means the use of secondary resources to write a research report and then giving your own opinion or recommendation on the topic. On the other hand, research paper is doing the research itself. It can involve quotes or information from different sources but it requires critical analysis of the information presented in the research paper and then a conclusion and recommendation is achieved.
The second assignment is to discuss audience. In 200-250 words, discuss why it is important to understand the audience when a person is writing a research paper. What elements are affected by who the audience is? (HINT: TONE, DICTION, and INFORMATION).
When a writer is writing a research paper, it is important that he should be completely aware of his audience. This is imperative because the writers who fail to understand and analyze who their readers will be, will risk failing to reach the main goal that the paper intends to achieve. Hence, it is essential that, in order to provide appropriate language, context, and tone that is suitable for the audience who will read the research paper – the knowledge of audience should be the first-hand approach before starting the research paper. However, a balance should be maintained as accommodating too much of an audience perspective in the research paper could eventually result in hampering the message that the writer needs to convey (Charles, p.1).
Three most important elements that are affected by whom the research paper is targeted at is tone, diction, and information:
- Diction refers to the level of conciseness and fluency in the writer’s choice of word. Of course, the research paper will be written considering the audience demographics in mind. This will reflect the usage and the arrangement of words that should take place in the research paper.
- Tone of the research paper will expose the mood of the writer in his research paper, which will combine both the usage, and diction of words as well as the writer’s preference for the sentence structure and length.
- The kind of information that should be shared through the research paper with the target audience is critical. The level of information will depend upon the arrangement of target and care should be taken in content management of the research paper in order to keep it unbiased and not focus towards a certain group or class.
The third assignment is to discuss research. What is it? What is the purpose of research? How should it be placed in the research paper? What are some things that should not be done (HINT: QUOTE STACKING)? How is it cited? Why should it be cited? What are the differences between direct quotations, paraphrasing, and summarizing? Why is it important to know? What about plagiarism? In 200-250 words, please discuss these elements.
Research is a methodical analysis to explain, predict, control and describe the factors that are observed. This may involve deductive and inductive methods. Deductive methods involve methods that are verified through the hypothesis. On the other hand, inductive methods analyze the phenomenon already presented through identification of the structure, general principles, and processes. There are three different purposes to perform research. First is the exploration that involves gaining familiarity with the topic of research. Second, is providing a description of the details mentioned in the paper and the third purpose explaining the description of the research paper (Charles, p.1).
It is extremely important that the plagiarism should be avoided when the research is written in the research paper. Plagiarism means to take someone else’s ideas and to state them as your own work without giving full credit to the author of the published work. This is completely unethical, and it is also significant to note that quote stacking in the paper should be avoided. If direct quotes are added, the author of the source should be given full credit with in-text citations and at the end of the research paper in the reference list. In-text citations should be provided according to the writing styles such as APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, etc. The paraphrasing of the research is rewriting the material completely in your own words and then the source is cited. On the other hand, summary means condensing the source material to present important ideas, concepts, and facts and leaving out the irrelevant material. This also requires that the source should be cited according to the writing style of the research paper. Indirect quotation, the direct quotes can be used from the source of information and should be presented in quotation marks with proper in-text citation of the source (Murthy, p.10).
What is the difference between a topic and a thesis statement? What happens when a thesis is too broad? What happens when a thesis is too narrow? Is a thesis important? Why? What does it do? How does one create a thesis?
A thesis statement of a research paper explains the main purpose and scope of the research paper and it should meet three main criteria. First, the thesis statement should be arguable, and it should not be a mere statement to define a purpose. It must explain the real topic. Second, the thesis statement should be limited, and it should let the research paper develop on its own. Third, it should well-integrate and unite with the main paper so that the research paper does not stray from the main topic. On the other hand, the topic sentence is usually the first sentence of the paragraph where it explains the main crux of the paragraph. The topic sentence should have a phrase from the thesis that explains the coordination between the thesis and topic sentence (Charles, p.1).
Defining the thesis statement is imperative because it controls the subject matter of the research paper and defines significant concept of paper. Thesis statement summarizes the main points of the entire paper and explains why it is important to read the research paper. It is important that a thesis statement should not make any sort of commitments that the research paper is unable to accomplish. A well-written thesis statement will state the main ideas and the significant part of the research paper. Hence, a good thesis statement should not be too narrow or too broad. If it is too narrow, the paper will go astray, and if it is too broad, the research paper will look artificial and will have no reason.
Discuss the importance of presentation. How does a writer " present" his or her paper? Why is it important that the paper be formatted correctly? Why is it important that the spelling and grammar are checked? How does that affect the impression of the writer?
The presentation of the research paper is very important, and it is the first visual impression of the report that a reader perceives from the report. If the presentation of the research paper is not appropriate, it is like the hard work of the writer has gone in vain. When the research paper is presented to the instructor, it generally takes a written formal report format. This will include following a proper writing style such as APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, etc and with properly aligned writing format and page margins, font, paragraph indentation and line spacing. A similar format should be followed throughout the research paper in order to well present it to the instructor (Murthy, p.10).
The research paper can be presented in MLA writing style. The MLA writing style is recommended by Modern Language Association. This writing style is used commonly in subject areas regarding humanities such as literature and composition and in religion, history, and philosophy. The in-text citation for MLA states the author name and page number of the source. Another writing style commonly used in papers is APA writing style. This format is recommended by American Psychological Association and is most commonly used in papers of social sciences. The in-text citation for APA states the author name and year of publication of the source (Murthy, p.10).
The research paper should be proof-read before the final submission to the instructor for plagiarism check. Correct punctuation, spelling and grammar are significant factors of written communication and the reader is easily able to form an opinion of the writer and his maturity level based on the presentation and content of his literature presented in the research paper.
Discuss introductions and conclusions. What is the importance of the introduction in a research paper? What does it do? What about the conclusion? Why is that important? What does that do?
Introductions and conclusions of a research paper play a significant role as introduction provides details and thesis statement regarding the paper and helps the reader make up their mind accordingly of what they expect to read up ahead in the research paper. The framing of impressive introduction is important because it leads the reader from reading a general topic towards the main concept that will be presented in the paper. The introduction helps in establishing the significance of the research by summarizing the main ideas and concepts stated in the rest of the research paper. The introduction will state the purpose of the report, the thesis statement, and the methodological approach taken in the paper for the readers to read the research paper in a sequential manner. It is important that the introduction should be well-written because the writer does not get a second chance to make a good first impression and engage the reader.
Conclusions, on the other hand, wrap-up the entire report and are significant for research paper because the conclusion present important points and aspect discussed in the research paper. It is important to note that conclusion is not mere summary of the research paper, but it involves critical thinking like the rest of the paper. The conclusion reflects the important points that the writer has stated in the research paper. It is important that in order to conclude the research paper well, the writer should convey closing thoughts and make recommendations of the implications of the argument presented in the paper. The focus should be broadened at the end of the paper, and the reader should be left with good and interesting last sentence.
Discuss how research can help a writer make support an argument. You may want to explain how a writer can use research that does not support his/her point to support his/her point still.
The research will help a writer to support his argument that the research paper will be based upon. Second, is providing a description of the details mentioned in the paper and the third purpose explaining the description of the research paper. The introduction of the research paper will help support the thesis statement of the research paper. The thesis paper will help the reader make up their mind accordingly of what they expect to read up ahead in the research paper (Murthy, p.10).
In order to present a convincing unbiased message, a writer requires to research and outline some of the common arguments that he wish to presents in his research paper that will clearly state his position / support on the point presented. Research supports to present the argument presented in the research paper and also provides a counter argument and refute the opposing argument of the thesis statement. The opposing arguments are crucial because it is not necessary that the readers will simply agree to the writer viewpoint so the counter-arguments should be present to illustrate both points of view (Allen, p.2). The readers who support the writers’ argument will require little information to align with his position but the ones who do not agree will require more in-depth explanation and analysis to help them either change their viewpoint of support their existing one. This is accomplished by efficient research that will support both the perspectives (Allen, p.2).
