Disabled people are viewed in different ways. Disabled people have to develop a tough skin for them not to be affected by the various stereotypes about them. This paper talks about the various ways disabled people are viewed by society, the medical experts and even themselves. Disabled people are treated differently depending on where they are.
Having a disabled sister has taught me how society views disability. Disabled people are often considered defective and abnormal. Society in general also fears what is unlike them. They fear, and pity disabled people. One would fear an individual who is of unsound mind thinking they would be attacked. A few years ago, I watched a woman scold her children for wanting to play with a child suffering from Down syndrome. I believe she feared the child and did not want her children to interact with the disabled child for fear of getting disabled too.
In the medical world, disability is treated just like any other abnormality or disease. The fact that a person does not have a hand does not prove that he or she is abnormal. Parents are advised to look after their disabled children not treating them in a different manner from the rest of their other children. When my sister was born, I watched the doctors demonstrate to my parents how they would take care of her since she lacked both legs. She was treated the same way as we have due to the guidance of the medical team. She was also enrolled in a special school which enabled her to cope effectively.
Disabled people in most developed are well-taken care off since there are technology and medical care that is up to date. Here society does not discriminate against them as much. In most developing countries, however, disabled people are considered a curse to society and are often segregated.
Many disabled people look down upon themselves often having feelings of depression. However, there are those who are not affected by their condition and have even proved to do great things. Nick Vujicic is a man without hands and who has spoken to many people around the world motivating them. As the popular saying goes “disability is not inability”. One can leave a completely normal life.
