Thesis. Writing in the field of Engineering plays an important role in sharing engineering ideas, concepts and knowledge to other people in a way that the readers will understand the context even if they are not expert and familiar with engineering (Winsor 58). Writing serves as an engineer’s report about the things he already knows and it is his full responsibility to make the readers find interest in what they are about to read. Also, the proper use of language, which can be reflected through the engineer’s writngs, is necessary in conveying the underlying concepts behind the physical manifestations which are made possible by the science of engineering (Winsor 59).
Main Points. Written outputs in engineering are significant especially in laboratories wherein data are being collected. In fact, instruments found in an engineering laboratory are designed to produce written outputs which will be used as the primary source of engineers in their experimentations (Winsor 62). This only implies that writing is an important tool especially in the documentation part of engineering because written documents served as the summarization or generalization of the findings and results of the experiments. With these documents engineers do not need to repetitively do the same experimentation in order to produce the results they needed. Instead, they just need to rely on previous findings on other engineers and use these findings as references for their own related works (Winsor 63).
Writing has something to do with how a certain product is being engineered and created. Through writing, the engineers have means to list all of the observations and behaviors of the materials that they are going to produce (Winsor 64). From there, they are able to reproduce, upgrade, or develop materials with the help of the observations they have found. The worth of these observations which are properly documented are highly valued especially if data it contains are accurate enough to be used for comparison with other related works as well as to develop theories which will improve engineering in the future (Winsor 65).
Writing not only served as compilation of important data and observations; it also recognizes the people behind the efforts and results of the experiments (Winsor 66). After all, it is the engineers who worked behind the production of materials, especially if these materials will be brought into market, are the ones responsible for the spreading not only the knowledge and information about the products, but also their interpretations and analysis about the value of the products in the market. With this, people involved in market industry will now have their future references on the engineers who can they put their trust in developing products of high quality and highly competitive in the market (Winsor 67).
Conclusion. Writing in engineering can be described as a “story” about the creation of the product. The story is made in order to make the readers easier to understand the principles behind the development of the product (Winsor 68). The story also serves as a form of representation for its writers in a bigger community where there are many other stories published. It only shows that writing is an important in the field of engineering because it also serves as the representation of the manifestations of the ideas of the engineers. Thus, it can be said that the documentations of their works serve as their contribution for the benefit of the people and the engineering community (Winsor 69).
Evaluation. Even it is stated in the context, engineers do not show great resistance to knowing that knowledge mediates experience. The reality is that some engineers do not prefer to do things linguistically; instead, they prove their point through their works. It is not that engineers appreciate the value of language; engineers also receive criticisms about their works and the fact that they accept these criticisms means that engineers use these as motivations in order to improve their skills and make their future works more beneficial. In Winsor’s article, the use of us and them, for me, refers to those engineers who put their full dedication on the field and for the benefit of the majority. Using those binaries is justifiable enough because she knew better from her experience in writing and through communication with her engineering students.
