Abortion is a sensitive and controversial topic in the current generation. Whether abortion is ethical or right is a grey area topic still. Pro-abortionists present convincing arguments as to why they support abortion. Similarly, Anti-abortionists offer equally convincing arguments with a different twist in view concerning their stand on abortion. The current generation considers abortion as a form of contraception in cases of unwanted pregnancies. Even though there are numerous alternative forms of contraception, abortion remains the last choice in the event of an occurrence of unwanted pregnancy (Elley 449).
The use of contraceptive has evolved tremendously from early generations to the current generation. The past generation never relied on some of the modern forms of contraception currently used today. Coitus interruptus is one of the oldest forms of contraception used in the olden days. It is currently known as a withdrawal method. It entails the interruption of sex just before the release of sperm so as to avoid conception.
Apart from withdrawal method, the old generation relied on herbal methods of contraception. The use of lemon to prevent conception was widespread in the olden days. Lemon contained spermicidal properties and was used by women in the old generation to prevent conception (Elley 449).Sponges were soaked in lemon and inserted into the vagina. Besides the use of lemon juice and withdrawal methods, the old generation utilized such herbs as Blue Cohosh and Pennyroyal. Herbal mixtures that induce abortions were used in case of unwanted pregnancies. In the olden days, the spacing of children was a daunting task given that information on conceptions was not widespread as compared to the current generation. In most cases, unwanted pregnancies lead to uneven spacing between children.
