Life drawing has a long history that probably started in the caves. It is the foundation of both painting and architecture. Although, there have been many great artists of life drawing, one of the most prominent names is Antonio Allegri da Correggio (1490-1534). He derived his name from his hometown Correggio, Italy. Correggio was a well-known artist in Italy and he has the influence of famous artists like Andrea Mantegna, Dosso Dossi and Leonardo da Vinci in his work. He might have visited Rome during his career as the influence of Michelangelo and Raphael is distinctly visible in his work. His life drawings are full of delicate lines and poses with grace. His mastery of playing with elements like light and shadow make him as a great artist of life drawing in the world of art. One of his famous works is the series of mural paintings painted on the dome of the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Parma, North Italy. These become popular as the Vision of St. John the Evangelist at Patmos. In the painting, Correggio expressed his absolute knowledge of a different viewpoint or perspective as well as the composition of the human body. The hair quality or texture and the softness of draperies worn by the depicted human figures seem real in his mural paintings or frescoes. In these paintings, Correggio created a structural model without any architectural structure within the composition. There is a clear eagerness of his human figures to touch the heaven in all of his famous paintings. This establishes him as one of the most thoughtful life drawing specialists.
His other great work is in the dome of the cathedral of Parma in Italy. This is a painting named ‘Assumption of the Virgin’. This is also his last famous painting. Here, the artist established an endless shining space that unites the barrel and the dome. He achieved this by using the right application of theme and color. The human figures are with a childlike beauty in this painting and it was this painting, which truly shot him in a big league of artists. He painted swirling figures with naked limbs in this painting. Thus, he clearly conveys the fact that he has an amazing knowledge of life drawing and its details. He was always excellent when it comes to creating a joyful expression for his human figures. It was, in fact, his excellence in life drawing that makes the otherwise dull dome of the cathedral like a heaven’s vault for the visitors. However, there was not a single dedicated student of Correggio in his lifetime, but many artists copied his style of painting during the 18th century. Some of the Baroque artists have also borrowed ideas from his style of painting in the 17th century.
He contributes significantly in the development of the Renaissance in Italy. His style, composition, and gesture of human figures are highly unmatched until date. In his art, Correggio did his best to create the feeling of witnessing the beauty of the celestial or outer- space over the head of every viewer by his fine sense of line drawing, color composition other elements. Correggio is an immortal for all the art lovers across the world as art critics consider each of his paintings, a rare masterpiece. His other notable paintings in which he gives a proof of his brilliance in life drawing are ‘The Nativity’ or ‘The Holy Night’, ‘Jupiter and lo’, ‘Adoration of the Magi’ and ‘The Education of Cupid’. His paintings show his extraordinary flair for drawing tender moving figures with much emphasis on clarity and achieving the right kind of softness. It is his triumph as a skillful artist because his human figures without any draperies do not appear vulgar, but look beautiful and elegant in every sense.
